Reverend Inez Jane Smith, 85, was born October 6, 1916 and departed this life on Thursday, August 15, 2002, at University Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Reverend Smith, a native of East St. Louis, Illinois, had lived in Augusta for forty-three (43) years. She was the youngest of four children born to the late Mr. and Mrs. H.D. Wallace.
Reverend Smith was educated through high school in Illinois. College work was done in South Dakota, Michigan and completed in Georgia. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education with concentration in English from Fort Valley State College (Salutatorian of her 1956 class) and earned a Master of Science Degree in Library Service at At lanta University, Georgia. Seminary training was done at Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Kan sas City, Kansas; and at Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania (now merged with ColgateRochester Theological Seminary). Lastly, she stud ied through Seminary Without Walls of Shaw School of Religion, located in Raleigh, North Carolina.
She retired from the Richmond County School Sys tem, as a Media Specialist, a School Secretary, Class room Teacher and a Librarian (Media Specialist). She worked in Peach County, Pulaski County, and Co lumbia County, as well as in Richmond County.
Rev. Smith served at the Medical College of Georgia as a Pastoral Counselor for Sickle Cell Patients from 1980-1991, and a tutor from 1978-1980. She was a Clergy volunteer for Hospice, which had its head quarters in St. Joseph Hospital. Rev. Smith was an Associate Chaplain at University Hospital from 1981 to the present. She also served as Assistant Minister at Tabernacle Baptist Church, ministering mostly to the sick and shut-in members.

Music has been a feature in her life. Before becoming a min ister, she sang in the Senior Choir at Tabernacle, and worked with music in her school positions. Rev. Smith taught pri vate piano lessons for years and wrote poetry as a hobby.
Survivors include: daughters, Wilmetta Langston Jackson, Fort Valley, Georgia, Theresa Smith Jennings, Yeadon, Penn sylvania and Phyllis S. Lee, Augusta, Georgia; sons, Rev. Wil liam Amos (Vivian) Smith, II, St. Peters, Missouri, Martin Andrew Robert (Linda) Smith, St. Petersburg, Florida, John Alden Smith, Sr., Henry Alien Smith, Philadelphia, Penn sylvania; son-in-law, John Edward Jennings, Sr., Philadel phia, Pennsylvania; sister, Mrs. Carolyn W. (Benjamin) May, St. Louis, Missouri; grandchildren, Captain Charles "Chuck" N. (Yolanda) Langston, III, Ft. Hood (Killeen), Texas, Pernell Smith, St. Petersburg, Florida, Jermaine Smith, Norcross, Georgia, Mona Smith, Tampa, Florida, John Alden Smith, Jr., Alexandria, Virginia, John Edward Jennings, Jr., Balti more, Maryland and Terrence Smith (Peggy) Jennings, Malvern, Pennsylvania; great grandchildren, Cody Navelle Langston and Nikkia Chandrelle Langston, Killeen, Texas; seven nephews, four nieces, four great nephews, seven great nieces, one great-great nephew and many, many friends and Associate Ministers.
