1924-2001
^By their fruits, ye shall laiow them....
Years ago a seed was planted into the lives of Doctor Sims, Jr. and Ollie Marshall Sims. And that seed, named Doctor David Sims, grew and grew and grew. And it produced many useful products. And that seed which came from the earth and lived for 77 years on this earth returned to the earth on Thursday, September 28, 2001.
"Doc," as he was affectionately known, was born and raised in the Gadsden Community. He was educated in the public schools of Richland County, and this is where he would plant his own seed. Loving the out-of-doors, it is understandable that much of his life was spent in the agricultural area - particularly a cotton, soybean, com, and wheat farmer. Rather than join the army, as most of his peers did, he agreed to stay on the farm and help his father. An industrious and hardworking man, in addition to his farming business, he was also a successful entrepreneur of the Gadsden Community.
His love for the land was only surpassed by his love for his God and his sincere civic spirit. He was dutifully involved in many church and community activities, namely, an active member of the St. Mark Baptist Church, since early childhood, a member of the Musical Choir for over 30 years, a member of the Trustee Ministry, a Charter Member of the Gadsden Community G-Mart Store, a member of the Gadsden Community Club, the Lower Richland Citizens Committee, the Lower Richland Branch of the NAACP, and he served as President of the Gadsden Precinct for over 30 years and was a dedicated poll manager for over 30 years.
Some of his special recognitions include: recipient of the Richland County Young Farmers Award 1968 and he was an outstanding baseball player during his young adult life.
As this seed, Doc, grew and planted roots during his tenure on earth, he and his devoted wife of 51 years, Hattie Jacques Sims, produced six offspring; four sons and two daughters. He was a caring and loving husband and father. He was a quiet, soft-spoken man who always greeted you with a smile. He was a generous and kind person to all.
Having fought Parkinson's Disease for a number of years, Doc knew that God had a plan for him and he was equipped to fight. He was strong and persistent and as God had it orchestrated, Doc celebrated his 77th birthday in the hospital with his family just two days prior to his passing. This plan called for him returning to his home, here in Gadsden to spend his final hours. There with his loving and devoted wife, all of his children, grandchildren, his only sister, his only brother, Pastor Howell, and other close family and friends peacefully and calmly responded to God's call to bid them all farewell. This call was for Doc to return to God who said, "From dust thou art, and to dust retumeth," for this seed was wrought well.
Fond and memorable moments will always linger in the hearts and minds of his loving and faithful wife, former Gadsden Magistrate, Hattie Jacques Sims; four sons, Doctor M. (Evelyn) Sims, Frank C. Sims, Herbert W. Sims and Williams E. Sims, all of Gadsden, South Carolina; two daughters, Margaret V. Sims, of Paoli, Pennsylvania and Hattie C. Sims, of Gadsden, SC; one brother, Henry (Esther Ruth) Sims, of Columbia, SC; one sister, Margaret S. (Arthur) Goodwin, of Columbia, SC; three grandchildren, Jeremy D. Sims and Matthew D. Sims, of the home and Kristen Lewis, of Eastover, SC; brothers-in-law, Dr. Matthew Jacques, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and William L. Jacques, of Providence, Rhode Island; and a host of relatives and friends. He will be missed dearly.
