Life's Seasons
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (NIV)
"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven..."
A Time to be Born... Nellie Melissa Weldon Scippio was born on July 20, 1914, in Lawrenceviile, (Gwinnett County) Georgia to the late William and Carrie Weldon. She was the second child of four children. Three preceded her in death: Geneva, William and Fannie.
A Time to be Educated... Nellie received her general education in the public schools of Harris and Gwinnett counties of Georgia with a high school diploma. She worked in several odd jobs in Columbus while studying for and receiving an LPN. Her spiritual traning started in Lawrenceviile at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and continued at Rose Hill Baptist in Columbus and Greater New Bethel Baptist in Opa Locka, Florida, where she was a member from early 1950 until her death. She loved the Lord and her Church family under the leadership of Rev. Dr. G. David Horton.
A Time to Love...In 1952 Nellie and Thomas Scippio were wed in Columbus. They moved to South Florida where Thomas grew up, shortly after their wedding. They did not bear children together, but Nellie was mother to Thomas' three children from another marriage: Thomas Jr., Diane and Dollie. Thomas, the love of her life preceeded her in death on August 8, 2005. Nellie was residing in a nursing home prior to Thomas' death. She came to Augusta in October 2005 and resided at The Place at Martinez until her death.
Time to Work...Nellie and Thomas moved to Opa Locka, a suburb of Miami, in 1953 where they lived and worked in that area. She worked at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami for over 35 years until her retirement. As a ward clerk, she was close to the patients and accompanied out of town patients to their homes when discharged. During her retire ment years, she drove a neighborhood school bus (she loved children and they her), and she volunteered in the schools and continued her dedicated work with her Church family through her mission circle and Sunday School class. She was also an usher. As an active AARP member, Nellie coordinated senior-adult activities for the Senior Center in the neighborhood to include trips and eating excursions. She also was a superb baker and enjoyed baking for the family and friends. She grew beautiful veggies and flowers and enjoyed fishing.
A Time to say FarewelL.On April 26, 2012, at 4:41 A.M., at The Place at Martinez in Augusta, GA, God dispatched his heavenly angels to her beside. God saw that the road was getting too difficult and hills were hard to climb. So, Nellie gently closed her eyes and whispered, "I'm yours, Lord. So, Low Down your Chariot and let me Ride."
A Time to Reflect...Left to sustain her legacy in addition to her niece and nephew, Connie and Humphrey Peterson are her stepchildren: Thomas Jr. and Diane (plus their children), of Miami; Dollie and her family of Bainbridge, GA; Nephews William Ford (Melanie) of Fayetteville, GA and Kevin Peterson (Henriette) of Springfield, VA; a special brother-inlaw, William Scippio (Straucy) of New Jersey; goddaughter, Pamela Bryant of Miami and a host of nieces, nephews and special friends.
If you would indeed behold the JSpirit of Death, Open your heart wide unto the body of life.
"You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter." Your ways...Even in the silent memory of God.
