The sun is a bit dimmer today. Our wife, mother, sister and friend went home to be with her Heavenly Father August 31, 2012 at University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia.
j:
On March 11, 1932, Shirley was the first of three children bom to the late John and Etta Mae Bell in Vidalia, GA. Shirley, Mary and Curtis were blessed to be raised in a loving Christian home. She was baptized at an early age at Hale Street Baptist Church, Augusta, GA, But later became a member of Beulah Grove Baptist Church. Shirley graduated from Haines Normal and Industrial Institute in 1949. She furthered her education and went on to graduate from Lamar School of Nursing in 1952. She fulfilled her calling for serving others when she became a Registered Nurse in 1953 and began her nursing career at Talmadge Hospital. In 1958, she began working at Gracewood State School and Hospital and remained there until she retired in 1986 after 31 years of service. Shirley enjoyed a very successful career throughout her tenure at Gracewood. She was a Unit Supervisor and later served in the capacity of a Unit Director. In 1976, she was awarded a full stipend by Gracewood to attend the Medical College of Georgia where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She was extremely proud of the fact that she graduated with honors having not attended school for over 25 years. In 1981, she became a proud member of the nursing sorority CHI ATA PHI where she maintained faithful membership.

Shirley was united in marriage to Joe N. Samuels Jr. in 1953 and through this union was bom two sons, Robert and Michael. Over the next 59 years Joe and Shirley enjoyed a life together that only others can envy. They both enjoyed outdoor activities like camping and fishing and truly enjoyed traveling this vast country of ours together. They were an inseparable couple who demonstrated the true essence of what a blessed marriage should look like.

As a faithful member of Beulah Grove Baptist Church, Shirley was a pioneer in a number

of ministries. She served in the Christian Education Office of Ministry Development and
