; obituary
Mr. James Edward Sams was bom to the late Charlie and Rutha Mae Hart-Sams on April 23, 1941. He entered into rest on September 14, 2013 at University Hospital. He was educated in the Burke County School System & graduated from Waynesboro Industrial High School in 1960. He was the first African-America salesperson of Barton Building Supply Co. James established several companies such as Awesome Pyramid Building Supply and Advanced Construction and Design Company.
James gave his life to Christ at an early age and was baptized at Portersville Baptist Church in Waynesboro, GA., under the leadership of Rev. O.S. Scott. He later was ordained as a deacon at Greater Young Zion Missionary Baptist Church. He later became a member of the Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church and served there faithfully as a Deacon until his death.
James was an avid lover of sports. We could always catch him watching the latest game at home in his favorite room "the green room". James was great at bowling and taught his wife to bowl. He was a member of the Southern Classic bowling league but his favorite sport was going fishing with his brothers and brother in- law. He loved to travel with his wife. He was a fighter and a lover of life, and would give his last to help anyone. He was a friend to all that he encountered.
He is preceded in death by two siblings: Bessie Sams and Henry Franklin Sams.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving & devoted wife, Helene Thomas Sams, Six children: Gilbert Baxley, Jeffrey Sams, Wanda (Leonard) Dixon, Maurice Sams, and Trevor Sams of Augusta, GA and Tiffany Kelly (Charlotte, NC). Seven step-children Wilhelmina (Joseph) Washington, Hephzibah, Ga., Marvin (Pam) Thomas & Loretta Hutto of Augusta, Ga., Joyce (Elijah) Greer, Dublin, Ga.,Vincent Thomas, Lithonia, Ga., and Damon Thomas, Marietta, Ga., Kerry Thomas (deceased), and a friend and dedicated partner Charles "Chuck" Harmon.
Two sisters: Betty (Jimmy) Williams, St. Petersburg, Fla., and Josephine (John P.) Jones, Augusta, Ga.; seven brothers: Sheridan President, Williford (Patricia) Sams, Robert (Eloise) Sams, Willie (Gwendolyn) Sams, Sammy Sams, all of Augusta, GA. Charlie (Eloise) Sams III, Hephzibah, Ga., and Leroy Sams, Syracuse, New York. He leaves to cherish a very loving aunt and uncle, Irene Sams and Frank Sams, of Augusta, Ga.; and a host of grandchildren, step grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The family has shared many wonderful days of pleasure & joy with our loved one, James E. Sams.
GRANPAPPY JAMES Seems like yesterday we were laughing together Then we opened our eyes to realize gone means forever. The pain hurts and it aches, slicing our hearts. Knowing that for the rest of our lives we shall be apart. We eagerly anticipate that day in our lives, hoping to see that when we die, you'll open up those
gates to heaven for Ashanti and I. You're officially gone, but always and forever in our hearts.
You, Ashanti and me, together yet separately apart. By Lynn & Ashanti
POEM Remember me with smiles and laughter Because that is the way I remember you all. If you can't remember me with smiles and laughter
Then don't remember me at all. Sister, Josephine Jones
His w ife's L-^st Thoughts
A Charge to keep I have a God to glorify, was my husband's favorite song
A prayer from his lips like one you never heard. The sincerity of his heart went to our God above.
No more limping Jay, falling, or pain that I know you felt.
You're now in heaven walking around complete.
A STRONG MAN, GREAT COURAGE, HARD WORKER, MOTIVATOR AND STRAIGHT TO THE POINT
Yow lovmgp wtfej Helena L Scwny
