WOODWARD FUNERAL HOME Brooklyn, New York Reverend Robert Smith
Funeral Service JANUARY 2, 2000
FOSTER CHAPEL BAPTIST CHURCH Roebuck, South Carolina Reverend Douglas Dennis
Christ said, "In my Fathers house there are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you and I go to prepare a place for you."
During the morning of our Lords birth our caring Father dispensed an angel to Saint Marys Hospital room of our beloved mother Georgia M. Russell-Cohen. The angel beckoned her to come promising no more sorrow or pain. With a few final short breaths she went home to be with her Lord.
Georgia M. Russell-Cohen, the beloved daughter of the late Fannie Fuller and the late Luther Rogers, was born on March 18,1924 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. After fighting a good fight of faith, she departed this earthly life on December 25,1999.
Nana, as she was so affectionately called by her grandchildren and even friends of her grands, was later reared and lived in Brooklyn, New York during her teenage and most of her adult life but she never forgot where home was. It was during these years that she met and later married the late Lonnie Russell of Bellhaven, North Carolina. From this union, there were five children: Nellie Taylor, the late Lonnie Russell II, Lionel J. Russell, Rosalind Blackwell and Gerald J. Russell. Several years later, following the death of Lonnie Russell, Sr., Georgia returned home to Spartanburg. There she met and later married the late Leonard Cohen who had nine children from a previous marriage. A Sunday dinner or cookout with both groups of children was like a family reunion. Georgia was blessed to be surrounded by so much love.
Georgias happiest hours were when she returned home to her beloved Foster Chapel Baptist Church. She served several years on the Usher Board and was a proud member of the Eastern Stars.
She is survived by: her four children, Nellie Taylor and Rosalind Blackwell of Brooklyn, New York, Lionel J. Russell and Gerald J. Russell of Baltimore, Maryland; one son, deceased-Lonnie Russell II; nine stepchildren, Charles Cohen, Doris Cohen, Thomas Cohen, John Earl Cohen, Janet McMillian, Judy Miller, Roger "Butch" Cohen, Douglas Cohen and Robin Moore; one brother, Oree Rogers; five sisters, Florence Meadows, Florence Fuller, Mary Louise Thomas, Elmira "Peggy" Davidson and Jeanette Fuller; two brothers-in-law, George Borden and I.D. Davidson; one sister-in-law, Viola Fuller; two daughters-in-law, Conchita C. Russell and Bernedette Russell; two sons-in-law, Walter Blackwell and Hayward L. Taylor; two devoted friends, Compton Toussaint and Margaret Johnson; twenty-four grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; several cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
And God shall wipe all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be more pain; for the former things are passed away.
