Obituary
Eugene Warrell Ruffin, Jr. was born in Port Arthur, Texas on January 27, 1921. He was the eldest of eight children born to the late Eugene W. Ruffin. Sr. and Emma Brayboy-Ruffin. He departed this life on Wednesday, August 12, 1998 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta, Georgia.
Eugene attained his education at Lincoln High School in Port Arthur, Texas. As a young man he worked on the Gulf Port Ship Line and on the Kansas City Southern Railroad as a waiter. After being employed by the railroad, he worked on the Hillfield Army Depot. He later joined the United States Army on February 26, 1948 in Fort Douglas, Utah. He loyally served with the United States Army for over 20 years. He actively served in World War II and in the Vietnam Affair. He received a Purple Heart in the Korean Conflict. After retiring from the military, Eugene was hired by the United States Government as a GS12 Training Specialist/Instructor.
All through his military career, Eugene attended schools of higher education. He received several certificates from the U.S. Army of Communications Electronics School and he received an Associates Degree in Applied Science at Brookdale Community College.
On August 1, 1939, Eugene took Helen Ruth Olivers hand in marriage. From this union came four children: Lana Bea, Francis Irene, Carolyn Anne, and Eugene Warrell, III.
Eugene belonged to several groups and organizations which have greatly contributed to the community. He was the treasurer and secretary of the Juneteenth Society of Augusta, Georgia and he was the treasurer of the Funseekers camping group. He also belonged to the Masons group (Chapter unknown). He was very dedicated to all of these groups and he was well-loved by fellow members.
As a young man, at age 13, he became a baptized member of his church. At the time of his death he was a member of the Barnes Avenue Chapel of Fort Gordon, Georgia. He was nominated "Daddy" of the church by its members. He earnestly fulfilled this role for many years up to the moment of his passing.
Eugene leaves to cherish fond and happy memories: His wife, Helen Ruth Ruffin; his eldest daughter, Lana Bea Chambers of Los Angeles, California and her children Tonya De Lana Key and her loving husband Edward of Los Angeles, California, and their children Tyrus and Twayne; Asiak Verlia Thomas and her husband Tommy of Los Angeles, California, and their children David, Denise, and Donell; and Cordell Chambers of Glendora, California. He leaves his loving memory to his daughter Frances Irene Irvine and her husband Tommy Lee of Asbury Park, New Jersey and their two children Reginald and Timothy; his youngest daughter, Carolyn Anne Broussard and her husband Ouinten of Los Angeles, California, and their two daughters, Jennifer and Myisha Clinkscale; and his only son, Eugene Warrell Ruffin, III and his wife, Dawn of Kent, Washington, and their three children, Tylisha, Angela, and Anthony. He also leaves his siblings, Reghina Blackman of Washington, D.C., Rosetta Ruffin of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Jesse Ruffin of Los Angeles, California. He will also be fondly rememberd by a host of nieces, relatives and friends.
