Gladys Philpot Roberts was born January 13, 1912 in Burke County, Ga. She was the oldest daughter of Lynwood and Lula Mae Philpot of Burke County who preceded her in death. God called her name into eternal life on April 19, 2006 at her residence.
She was educated in the Burke County School System. At an early age she joined the New Springfield Baptist Church of Alexander, Ga. Under the leadership of Rev. R.L. Boyd where she was a member of the choir. She was later united in marriage to Dea.Leroy Roberts who preceded her in death, May 3, 1996. After relocating to Augusta, she joined the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. There she continued her love for singing in the Mt. Calvarian Gospel Choir. She was a member of the January Birthmonth Club and was a Deaconess until her health failed her. For many years she worked as a domestic worker, traveling to New York and Philadelphia until she began employment at the Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center. There she worked until retirement in 1983 for twenty-one years.
Mrs. Roberts loved to sing, cook and work in her garden. She is at rest now with our heavenly father. Our hearts are filled with sorrow, but we realize this home going is the greatest experience of her life,as she was a faithful worker for God. There are three steps to heaven, out of self, into Christ into Glory. She loved and took the first step in life, the second step she lived a beautiful life, and the third and final step to Christ. Nanny as we all called her was the oldest of six generations. She had a favorite scripture that she often quoted and in her memory we quote it as she rest sweetly today in the care of the Good Shepherd. That scripture is the 23 Psalm.
She leaves to cherish her memory a loving and devoted daughter, Mrs. Doris Lee Jones of Augusta, step daughter, Ethel Mae Rowe, one brother-in-law, Rev. Willie (Mary) Roberts, two sisters-in-law, Arizona Mack of Trenton, NJ., Ora Evans of Augusta, three grandchildren, Rufus Owens, Sr., Linda (Milton) Williams, Jr., and Georgia Lee Jones, all of Augusta, three extended granddaughters, Willa West, Minister Ruby Simmons, and Ashley Elam all of Augusta, twelve great grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren, six great-great-great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and friends.

WHEN I MUST LEA VE YOU
When I must leave you for a little while,
Please go on bravely with a gallant smile Andfor my sake and in my name, Live on and do all things the same Spend not your life in empty days, But fill each waking hour
in useful ways Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer, And I in turn will comfort you and hold you near.
