Dr. Canute M. Richardson passed away at University Hos

pital on December 26th after an extended illness. / <?/5

Dr. Richardson served Paine College in several capacities over a period of twenty-six years. He was Chairman of the Department of Education, Dean of Instruction and Vice-President for Admini strative Affairs. Twice during his tenure, he was called upon to serve the institution as Acting President.

Prior to coming to Paine College, he taught at Statesboro, Georgia and served as principal of Colleton High School, Walterboro, South Carolina. He also served as State School Consultant for the Georgia State Board of Education.

In addition to his employment, Dr. Richardson participated in many civic activities throughout the city and state for which he will be missed. He was a member of St. Marys Episcopal Church where he was formerly a Vestryman. He was Chairman of the Augusta-Richmond County Bicentennial Commission and a mem ber of the Georgia Commission for the National Bicentennial celebration. He was also a member of the Georgia Hall of Fame Commission. He was honored for his contributions by the award ing of the LL.D. Degree by Morris Brown College, inclusion in Personalities of the South and Leaders in Education, and for his efforts to have architectural barriers removed, he was cited by the Georgia Association of Para plegics.

Born in Bluefield, Nicaraugua, he was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Lionel Richardson. He came to this country to complete his education and received the bachelors degree from Morris Brown College and his graduate degree from Columbia University. He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.

He is survived by a devoted wife, the former Josephine Alien; one daughter, Mrs. Wilhelmina Brodie; two granddaughters, Misses Michelle and Lisa Brodie; and three sisters, Mrs. Mae Thomas and Miss Mignonne Richardson of Mexico City, Mexico; and Mrs. Jane Cowan of Orlando, Florida.
