(Obituary

Jennie Gardenia Murray Pyatt was born August 10,

1912, in Williamsburg County, SC, the youngest of

the thirteen children of the Rev. Winfield W. Murray

and Alice Parker Murray.

Mrs. Pyatt attended the public schools of

Williamsburg County until the age of 13, when she

moved to Charleston to live with a brother and his

family. There, she attended Burke High School,

distinguishing herself as a straight A student and

being named valedictorian of her graduating class.

She subsequently completed a teachers training

program and began her career as an elementary school

teacher. She taught in the public schools of Berkeley

and Williamsburg counties before being married on

S eptem ber 25, 1932 to R udolph A. Pyatt of

Charleston.

% After giving birth to the couple's first child, Mrs.
Pyatt put her teaching career on hold for the next 18

years, choosing instead to remain home and raise

their six children.

03 "I kept my yard clean and my floor clean so they could stay [home] and play and not be on the street", Mrs. Pyatt recalled in an interview for an article in "The Post and Courier" on the Pyatt's 60th Wedding Anniversary.
Mrs. Pyatt did a good deal more than keep the yard and floors clean during those years. She was a devoted wife, a loving and caring mother and an excellent
% teacher to her children, preparing them for school away from home.

ft

A fte r re tu rn in g to work as a te a c h e r in the

C harleston C ounty School system, Mrs. Pyatt

enrolled as a student at Allen University, taking

classes at night and in summer school. She received

a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education

and finished Cum Laude in her graduating class.

Her dedication, determination, the sacrifices she

made and her strong belief that education is crucial

to one's success formed a solid foundation for her

children in the pursuit of their careers.

Mrs. Pyatt was also an inspiration and strong role

model for the hundreds of students who she taught.

Upon her retirement in 1978, she was cited by the

C h arlesto n C ounty Board of T rustees for

% distinguished service and contributions to students in
the county.

A devout Christian, Mrs. Pyatt was an active member of Ebenezer AME Church for more than 60
$ years. In 1983, the church formally recognized her
with an award for "distinguished, loyal and dedicated service". She also received several awards for her work with the W om en's Missionary Society and was named p re sid e n t of th e year tw ice by th e P alm etto Conference of the AME Church, while serving as president of the Julia L. Gilliard W om en's Missionary Society at Ebenezer.
To her devoted "Gus", her husband of 63 years, "J" was wife, adviser, confidante and nurse. To her children she was a wonderful mother who made great sacrifices purely out of love. To her church she was a C hristian. To her friends, she was loyal and supportive. To strangers, she was a good Samaritan.
Her courage in caring for her husband during his
i lengthy illness, while she herself was ill, is a model of love, strength and devotion.
Mrs. Pyatt died Monday, March 18, 1996 at Roper
i Hospital. She is survived by: her husband, Rudolph A. Pyatt, Sr. of Charleston; two sons, Rudolph A. Pyatt, Jr. of Fort Washington, MD and James W. Pyatt of Queens, NY; four daughters, Jennie L. - Crossing The Bar -

Sunset and evening star, And one clear callfor me!

And may there be no moaning o f the bar, When I put out to sea.

But such a tide as moving seems asleep. Toofullfor sound andfoam.

When that which drewfrom out the boundless deep.

Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark!

And let there be no sadness o ffarewell, When I embark;

For tho'from out our bourne o f time and place,

ft

Theflood may bear mefar. I hope to see my Pilotface toface. When I have crossed the bar.
