Obituary
Joseph Pope, eldest son of the late Stonewall Jackson and Amanda Blount Pope, was born February 21, 1918. He departed this life on July 31, 1994, after an extended illness.
Joseph's early educational training took place at Berry OTCelly Training School in Method, North Carolina.
At a very early age he joined Oak City Baptist Church where he continued to serve his church and loved his church family until his health failed him. In years past Joseph served as a member of the Trustee Board and Male Chorus.
In 1942, Joseph was joined in holy matrimony to Lillian Evelyn Hall. They chose to live their entire married lives in the Nazareth community. Their love and affection endeared them for over forty-six years. She preceded him in death six years ago also on July 31
"Joe" as he was affectionately known to us, possessed many qualities that endeared him to all who knew him. He was a role model, father, grandfather, big brother, friend and telephone buddy to many. His kind nature and sometimes flirtatious manner brought a lot of smiles and laughs to many. Joe's generosity and willingness to share his home and whatever he had with others has made a father to many. In 1993, Joe was honored as one of the recipients of the Jefferson Award for exemplifying the most caring, congenial and dedicated services to the sick and shut-in, and providing unwavering support services to neighbor hood families and friends. A love for everyone was deeply rooted in him.
One son Joseph Pope, Jr. has preceded him in death. He leaves a legacy to cherish his memories: three sons, Paul R. Pope, Michael J. Pope and Terry B. Dunn of Raleigh, NC. Two foster daughters, Dorothy Mangum and Margies Brown of Zebulon, NC. Four grandchildren, Michael J. Pope, Jr., LaTonya and Cecilia Pope and Sharita Dunn. Three sisters, Mary F. FearnotofFarRockaway, NY. Gertrude Pope and Amanda Hooker of Raleigh, NC. One brother Paul R. Pope, Sr. of Raleigh, NC. One Aunt, Annie Hicks of Raleigh, NC. Three brother-in-laws, Joseph Goodson and Robert Hooker of Raleigh, NC and Frank Fearnot of Far Rockaway, NY; and a host of nieces, nephews, and relatives and friends.
