his transition from this earthly life. He was bom in Augusta, Georgia on March 16,1948. He was
the second child of Marie Peters Brown and the late George Raymond Peters, Sr.
He was Christened at infancy and Baptized at an early age from the Rock of Ages C.M.E. Church.
Dr. Peters attended the Richmond County Public Schools and was a 1965 graduate of Lucy Craft Laney High School. He obtained a Bachelor's Degree from Paine College, he was the salutatorian of the class of 1969. He obtained a Master's Degree from the Oberlin College (Oberlin, OH) and a Doctorate in English and Afro-American Studies from Princeton University (Princeton, NJ).
He was a noted professor at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Notre Dame. At both Universities, Dr. Peters was known for his knowledge, patience, and his ability to encourage and motivate the students to put forth their best effort.
Dr. Peters was an accomplished author. Some of his noted books include: William Faulkner; The Yoknapatawpha World and Black Being; African Openings to the Tree o f Life; The Lyrics o f the Afro-American Spiritual. Dr. Peters was a very pleasing person to all people. He had an exceptional love for the senior citizens when visiting home (Augusta); he would always say to his family, "I have got to make a special effort to call or visit the elderly because these are the ones that most people forget." He showed a keen interest and love for his nieces and nephews from infancy to adulthood, "Uncle Erk" would encourage them to READ, READ, READ ... and work hard to further their education. Each one of them truly loved their "Uncle Erk."
Survivors include: mother, Mrs. Marie Peters Brown; stepfather, Eddie Brown, Augusta, GA; three sisters, Mrs. Carolyn P. Dixon, Hephzibah, GA; Ms. Gertrude Postell and Susie Stevens, Augusta, GA; four brothers, George R. Peters, Jr., Waynesboro, GA; Dr. Alfred B. Peters, Macon, GA; Larry T. Peters and Spencer J. Peters, Augusta, GA; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Carol Peters, Waynesboro, GA; and Mrs. Georgie Peters, Macon, GA; two brothers-in-law, Lester Dixon, Hephzibah, GA; and Jimmie Stevens, Augusta, GA; two god-sons, Corey Henry, South Bend, IN; and Darian Postell, Augusta, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and devoted friends.
