MRS. LUVENIA MEARS PEARSON was born in Sylvania , Georgia, on November 1, 1909, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Harvey (Sylvia) Mears, Sr. She departed this life on Saturday, January 28, 2012, at Golden Living (W indermere) Center. She was preceded in death by her sister, Alice Mears Henry; brothers, Henry Mears, Sr. and Peter Mears; nephew, H enry Mears, Jr.; grand niece Connie Johnson; godson, Rev. Hardy Bennings, Sr.
Mrs. Pearson confessed Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She has heen a member o f Trinity Christian Methodist Episcopal Church Augusta where she sang alto in the Senior Choir for more than 50 years and served for a period o f time as president; the Trinity Missionary Society for over 40 years and served as president for a number o f years; the Augusta-Sparta District as president and vice president; the AugustaSparta District Ministers' Spouses, serving as treasurer until her health began to decline. She also served on the District and Regional levels o f the Missionary Society.
She was united in holy matrimony to the late Rev. Benjamin Franklin Pearson o f Hampton, South Carolina, in 1939, at Vanderhorst C.M.E. Church, Thomson, Georgia. She served faithfully with her husband who was once the Presiding Elder o f the Augusta-Thomson District (currently the Augusta-Sparta District o f the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church).
She attended primary school in Millhaven, Georgia. After the death o f her father, her mother moved the family to Savannah, Georgia. She attended East Broad High School, a catholic school where federal Judge Clarence Thomas also attended; however, she graduated from Haines Normal Industrial High School in Augusta. Mrs. Pearson briefty attended Florida A& M University in Tallahassee, Florida, but later returned to Georgia where she earned a Bachelor o f Science degree in Trade and Industrial Education from Savannah State College (currently Savannah State University) at the age o f 58. She also graduated from the prestigious Poro Beauty School (Virginia) where she received an instructor's license in 1942, to train women to sell and distribute Poro Products to other black wom en who practiced the art and science o f hair care. As an instructor, she exposed students to the most state-of-the art classrooms and equipment.

Mrs. Pearson spent her life helping others. She becam e a licensed beautician and w orked to help "make people beautiful", for sixty years as she often stated. She opened the first State-certified School o f Cosm etology for African-Am ericans in Georgia, operating as Luvenia's School o f Cosm etology in Augusta. She operated this school from 1942 to 1964. Upon closing, it was converted to Luvenia's Beauty Salon. She received the Living Legend Award in 2005 as the oldest licensed beautician in the State o f Georgia.
Mrs. Pearson was em ployed by the Richmond County Board o f Education as a high school instructor o f cosm etology and retired in 1979, after 15 years in the classroom. She later becam e an instructor o f Cosm etology at Augusta Technical School. As a teacher, she m otivated and inspired her students to always be professional, especially in their speech and appearance.
She was a charter m em ber o f the Augusta Beauty Culturist League #50, Kappa Chapter o f Tau Gamma Delta Sorority, Inc., NAACP, and a lifetim e m em ber o f the Richmond County Retired Teachers Association. Additionally, she was a charter m em ber o f the Augusta Chapter o f the Key Women o f America, Inc.
Until recently, w hen she sold her house to T h e Eta Theta Zeta Foundation and m oved to St. John Towers, Mrs. Pearson had lived in the Laney Walker Boulevard area for over sixty years. A room in the newly-renovated Zeta House has been designated to house Mrs. Pearson's memorabilia.
She leaves to cherish her m em ory: two sisters-in-law, Freddie Mae Mears, Willingboro, NJ and Gloria Mears, Jamaica, NY; grand nieces Lavonne Mears Sewell and Patricia Mears Brooks, Baltimore, MD; H elen Mears Shorter, Willingboro, NJ; Valecia Mears Johnson, Frederickberg, VA; two cousins, Katie Hicks and Robert "Bob" Pennamon, Augusta; goddaughter, Mrs. Shirley Bennings, Augusta; godson, Rodney C. Jason, Jr.; adopted godchildren, Rev. J. Ronzell and Catherine Maness, Evans; devoted friends, Captain Hattie Elam/US N avy (Ret.), Martinez; Mrs. D orothy Jones, Augusta; Drs. Lola and Samuel Richardson, Martinez; caregivers, host o f cousins, and friends.
