Alsie HdWeS Parks was born February 22, 1920, in Lincoln County, Georgia to the late Payton and Gertrude Hawes.
At an early age she was converted and baptized at the New Tabernacle Baptist Church, Lincolnton, Georgia, where she was very active and served faithfully in so many capacities. She worked untiringly on the Finance Committee in order that a new sanctuary could be built.
She joined the Tabernacle Baptist Church, Augusta, Georgia under the leadership of the Rev. C. S. Hamilton, where she served on the Board of Trustees for a number of years. She sang with the R.A. Dent Senior Choir and was in the New Era Bible Class of the Adult Department of the Sunday School. During this time, she served as Secretary of the Adult Department of the Sunday School. For many years, she served as President of the Addie Harper Circle of the Missionary Society. For six years or more, she was chaperonefor the young people at the New Era Baptist Convention in Toccoa, Georgia and served as Vice President of the Womens Department of the New Era Baptist Convention. Due to ill health, she became inactive.
Alsie was educated in the church schools of Lincoln County and graduated from Washington High School, Washington, Georgia in 1939. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Fort Valley State College, Fort Valley, Georgia where she was crowned Miss Fort Valley State Summer School Queen. She received her Master of Arts Degree from Atlanta University, Atlanta, Georgia in the Area of Counseling and Business Administration.
Alsie was a Teacher and Guidance Counselor in the public schools of Lincoln County until her retirement in 1971. After retirement, she was a Counselor at the Sandbar Ferry Jr. High School and Paine College working from the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs. She also worked many years as a substitute teacher at Lucy C. Laney High School.
Prior to her illness, she was an active member of Georgia Association of Educators, National Teachers Association and Georgia Schools Counselors Association. She was a member of the NAACP and received an award for counseling girls and boys of that organization.
December 27, 1944 Alsie was joined in Holy Matrimony to Jesse Parks.
She leaves to cherish her memories: a devoted husband, Jesse Parks; two children, Alsie Delores Parks ofAtlanta, Georgia and David L. Parks, Augusta, Georgia; a devoted brother, Wayne (Timmie) Hawes of Lincolnton, Georgia; a devoted and caring sister, Geneva Leverett of Augusta, Georgia; three grandchildren, Courtney Shaw, Augusta, Georgia, Alsie Deonne Parks, Atlanta, Georgia and Dominique Parks ofAugusta, Georgia; one brother-in-law, Charlie Parks, Lincolnton, Georgia; one aunt, Geneva Norman, Hampton, Virginia and a host of "Special" nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
