On the first day of fall 2009, the bright and shining spirit of our family; a most adored and loved brother to Silas Jr., Jessye, Howard, and Elaine; the `coolest' uncle to ten nephews, four great-nephews, and two great-nieces; a faithful cousin to lots of members of the Norman and King families; godfather to Cydney, Clark, Adanne, and Adamma; a pal quite simply like no other to more devoted friends than one can count; and a loving husband to Lisa and special mentor and friend to stepdaughter Mauri - our dear George Edward Norman took wings for his final flight.
His first ambition had been to become a pilot and this is what he studied first. When the financial realities of such a study program became a burden, George moved on to his next dream, that of becoming a student at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. There his mind and soul took on their wings, and he never allowed the turbulence of life to disturb his flight plan, his energy, his love of people, or life itself, His absence now is a void we cannot even imagine attempting to fill.
Born to Silas and Janie King Norman in Augusta, Georgia on June 6,1959, he was the last of five children in a warm and loving home filled with faith in the Divine, self-reliance through education, and the lessons of community responsibility and service. He was an exceptional child and his parents, who felt that childhood allowed for its own rate of growth and maturity, resisted the invitation from his elementary school to have him skip grades due to his unusual competence and joy in learning. The dedication of the Norman family to education was so strongly rooted that Deacon Silas Norman, Sr. was still president of the Parent Teachers Association at Charles T. Walker Elementary School at the time the youngest in the family, George, was entering college. George attended Charles T. Walker Elementary School, A. R. Johnson Middle School, and Glenn Hills High School, graduating in 1977.
He was an active member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church and his musical gifts made him a part of Augustas larger community. George studied piano privately, as all of his siblings did; played guitar, as he loved to try anything that his older brothers could do; and played the trombone, as a part of his middle school and high school marching bands. His love for music never wavered and indeed expanded to his particular favorites: jazz performances by various artists; the Augusta area's own James Brown; the music of his exact contemporary, Michael Jackson; and with special pride and extraordi nary support, the voice and work of his big sister, Jessye.
George reveled in his years at Fisk University. He loved everything about this grand school: its brave and wonderful history, the storied professors past and present, and the friends forever that he met there. One of his proudest moments at Fisk was his entry into the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity on November 11,1978. He was thrilled to be an Alpha man then, and this joy and pride lasted until his last day on Earth. He graduated from Fisk with a Bachelor of Science Degree on May 12,1980.
But this was just the beginning of his new and adventurous flight. Atlanta University would be his next educational `fuel' stop, w7here he earned his Master of Business Administration degree on July 30,1982. George wras to discover that he possessed a real gift for business and organization and was employed by some of the largest business and accounting firms in the country: Dow Corning, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ernst and Young, BellSouth, Deloitte and Touche, and from 2004 as senior manager for business and technology risk management for BDO Seidman in Atlanta.
George loved travel and toured the globe: In Europe, he particularly enjoyed London and the South of France. He traveled to Japan, where he would take the Tokyo subway all over the city, with only a map in hand (all of this written in Japanese) because he was truly fearless. He loved the beach and the oceans as much, and made a point of taking time to meet and speak with people everywhere, as well as visiting these marvelous cities for the sake of it. He made friends easily and kept them equally as easily. George packed a great deal of living into his fifty years and was able to say near the end, which is an extraordinary statement on the part of anyone, that he had no regrets: he had been a part of an amazing world.
And thus, George Edward Norman, lived his life in virtual and real flight.

To My Wonderful Husband It broke my heart to lose you but you did not go alone, for part of me went with you the day God called you home. To see your face and watch you go right before my eyes, was harder than anyone would know except God who was by my side. Although you left me unexpectedly, I know that God knows best,
for now you are an angel and your body is at rest. I cherish our beautiful memories and your love is still my guide,
and though I cannot see you, you're always at my side. Until we meet again... Your loving wife, Lisa
