OBITUARY
Mrs. Nellie Adams Newton, b o m June 27, 1928 in Richland County, Gadsen, South Carolina to the late James and Lubertha Thompson Adams. She entered into eternal rest on Sunday, October 14, 1990 at Richland Memorial Hospital.
She joined in holy matrimony to James Newton in 1953. To that union, three children were b o m ; Karen, James Jr. and Terrence.
A graduate of Benedict College, she did graduate studies at USC, Winthrop College, San Antonio Texas College, Our Lady of the Lake College, and many other various colleges in the United States, during her extensive travel throughout the world with her husband's military career.
She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Texas, where she served on the Missionary Society. After moving back to Columbia, she reunited her membership with the Union Baptist Church where she also served on the Missionary Society.
She was a retired Home Economics teacher and Special Education teacher at the elementary level.
She is survived by her husband, retired MSGT James Newton Sr. of San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Karen J. Newton of Columbia, SC; sons, James E. Newton Jr. of San Diego, California and Terrence L. Newton of San Antonio, Texas; brother, Lewis Adams of Columbia, SC, four grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

When Albrecht Diirer (from whose ` Folded Hands" the cover design was adapted) was a poor struggling artist, a friend of his who also aspired to be an artist made an agreement with him that he would do manual labor to earn their living while Diirer studied and painted. Later, it was planned, he should have his turn to paint. But when success came to Diirer his friend s hands had become so twisted and stiff that he could no longer paint. One day, seeing his friend's work-worn hands in prayer, Diirer thought, "1 can never give back the lost skill of those hands, but I can show my feeling of love and gratitude by painting his hands as they are now, folded in prayer, to show my appreciation of a noble and unselfish character."
