THE OBITUARY
Because the Lord is my Shepherd, I have everything that I need ....
OPHELIA (BABE) MARIE McKIE McCAIN was the second of six children born to the late George and Annie W. Myers McKie on March 6, 1920. She was born in Aiken County, South Carolina and raised in Edgefield County. Ophelia was called home to receive her crown on Tuesday, October 12, 2004, at University Hospital, Augusta, Georgia.
Ophelia was raised under Christian principals. She was converted and baptized at an early age joining the Old Macedonia Baptist Church where she was a faithful and devoted member. Ophelia served the community at large through her love, friendship and untiring compassionate efforts as long as her health permitted.
She attended Morris School, Bettis Academy High School, Bettis Academy Junior College, Trenton, South Carolina, Alien University, Columbia, South Carolina where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Educa tion, and South Carolina State College, Orangeburg, South Carolina where she earned a Masters of Education. Ophelia touched thousands of lives during her professional career of 50 years. She retired from Edgefield County Public School after 42 years of dedicated teaching and then retired from the Minnie Palmore House after eight years of teaching.

Ophelia made contributions to many organizations such as the National Association of Educators and Edgefield County Teachers Association, Edgefield County Branch of the NAACP and Tau Gamma Delta Sorority, Inc. She also served as secretary of Old Macedonia Baptist Church for more than 50 years and served on the Voter Registration Election Commission of Edgefield County, South Carolina.
Ophelia was affectionately known as BABE to her family and friends. She was married to Jethro Roosevelt McCain, Sr. on July 4, 1938, and their marriage was blessed with two loving children. Jethro preceded her in death on April 10, 2004.
Ophelia leaves to cherish fond memories: a devoted son, Jethro R. (Sheryl) McCain, Jr., and a devoted daughter, Alberta R. (Donald) Dunn, both of North Augusta, SC. She was preceded in death by her stepdaughter, Estella McCain Comer. She also has an adopted son, Raymond "Larry" Carter, North Augusta, SC and stepson-in-law, Donald Coiner, Augusta, Georgia. Of five siblings she is survived by two brothers, Levi (Carrie) McKie, Aiken, SC and Freddie (Jeanette) McKie, Trenton, SC; three sisters-in-law, Lula McKie, Graniteville, SC, Allean Merriwether and Julia Garrett, both of Jamaica, NY; two brothers-in-law, George A. McCain and Wyatt Kenner (Belle) McCain, both of Jamaica, NY. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John C. and George McKie and one sister, Charlotte Simpkins. Babes life was further enriched with six grandchildren: Jacqueline (Clarence) Daggett, Cynthia (DeAngelo) Coleman, Nina (Russell) Bates, DeValle McCain, Whitney and Ashley Dunn; ten great-grandchildren: Damien, Nicholas, Sean, Julian, Torrey, Ryan, Teika, Chelsea, Jasmine and Jamari. Because of the special love Babe had for children, she enjoyed the love of six godchildren: Rosalyn McKie, Sharon Cain Larke, Willie F. Simpkins, Jr., Josephine Coursey, Michael Carter and Joseph Elam. She also shared an affectionate love with a compassionate care-giver, Mary Key-Turner; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Saxewett Mamma,
Our days and nights are lonely now. Why you had to go we dont know. It was in Gods plan a long time ago. We will miss you more than you know. Your demands and advice will never grow old, for you were a wise woman, so we know.
You are at peace now, fast asleep, and we are here trying not to weep. Farewell momma, you are not alone, the Mighty "Maker" has led you safely home. God saw the road was getting rough, the hills were hard to climb. He gently closed those loving eyes and whispered "Peace Be Thine." The weary hours, the days of pain and the sleepless nights are passed. The ever patient worn out frame has found sweet rest at last.
~ FAREWELL MOMMA, BUNS & BERTA

A TRIBUTE To OUR SISTER
~ What Qod Has Promised ~ God has not promised skies always blue, Flower streum pathways all our lives through. God has not promised sun
without rain, Joy without sorrow, peace without pain. But God has promised strength for the day, Rest for the laborer, light for the way, Grace for the trial, help from above; Unfailing sympathy, undying love.
