Hilda Eunice Mills Martin was born May 18, 1911 to the late Joseph and Lizzie Vives Mills o fPaincourtville, LA. She was the sixth of seven children. She attended elementary school in Assumption Parish and graduated from McDonough 35 High School in New Orleans, LA. She attended New Orleans University and Leland College from which she received the Bachelor o f A rts Degree in Education. Sister Martin began her teaching career in the schools of Assumption Parish. While teaching, Sister Martin continued to enhance her knowledge and teaching skills by way o f summer study and travel through Grambling College. She spent the remainder o f her career in the Ouachita Parish School System from which she retired in 1968.
In 1939 Sister Martin was united in holy matrimony to Benjamin Franklin Martin. To this union four children were bom whom she loved dearly and reared "in the fear and admonition o f the Lord." Each of her children are currently engaged in careers serving people.
A t an early age, Sister M artin accepted Christ and united with the Pilgrim Baptist Church in Paincourtville, LA. On moving to Monroe, LA she united with the Macedonia Baptist Church. She was an active, enthusiastic worker in the Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Youth Retreat, Mother's Board, and Choir Ministries where she served the Lord and His people with a quiet, beautiful spirit. After her husband became pastor o f the Saint Rest Baptist Church, she served faithfully in the following ministries: Sunday School Youth Teacher, Vacation Bible School, Willing Workers, and Pastor's A id Society. She served enthusiastically in any capacity in which she could be useful until she was physically unable to do so.
On January 28, 1998 Sister Martin leaves to cherish her memory, a husband of 58 years, Benjamin Franklin Martin of Minden, LA; daughters, Barbara Ann Patricia (Avery) Chandler o fFlint, Mich.; Veronica Eunice (Winfred) Thomas of Norfolk, VA; sons, Benjamin Joseph (Barbara), and Kenneth Bruce (Iris) M artin o f Atlanta, GA; stepson, Lawrence (Barbara) M artin of Monroe, LA; 15 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; brother, Nolan Mills of San Francisco, CA; godchildren, Fred (Mattie) Moss o f Shreveport, LA; and a host o f nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
