** OBITUARY **
Evans Metcalf Martin, the second child of Robert and Harriett Martin, and popularly known as "Chalky", was born on October 23, 1910, in Augusta, Georgia, in a section of the city known as "The Hill". He entered his eternal rest on Thursday morning October 14, 1982, after an extended illness.
After finishing the Weed Elementary School he completed his high school work at the Haines Institute, now known as the Lucy Laney High School. Later he attended Johnson C. Smith University, Morehouse College, and Virginia State College. He re turned to Augusta to work in the grocery store operated by his grandfather, the late Reverend Robert G. Martin, Sr., and his father, Robert G. "Bob" Martin, Jr.
Mr. Martin was active in the Hill Community and was a mem ber of many of its organizations. An avid tennis palyer, he was one of the founders of the Hill Tennis Club along with the Reverend Marion Zealey and Mr. Jim Robinson. His interest in tennis help ed to encourage both his family members and community associ ates to love and to participate in the sport. Moreover, ever since he joined in his youth, he was an ardent member of Gumming Grove Baptist Church, of which his grandfather was a faithful and gene rous co-pastor.
In 1940 Chalky married the former Carolyn Cuthbert while she was a student at Paine College. Upon her graduation she taught in the public schools of Augusta for a number of years. Theirs was a marriage of deep devotion, and to this union was born two sons.
Among his survivors are his widow, Carolyn C. Martin; their two sons, Robert Martin of New York City and Ronald Martin of Augusta; two grandchildren, Renee Martin and Klaus Martin; one sister, Lena Martin McKinney of Baltimore; ten nieces and nephews and many cousins and friends.
