Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of his

Perfect submission, perfect delight, visions of rapture now burst on my sight; angels descending bring from above echoes of mercy, whispers of love. (Refrain)

Perfect submission, all is at rest; I in my Savior am happy and blest, watching and waiting, looking above, filled with his goodness, lost in his love. (Refrain)

Thelma Mack was the embodiment of beauty, elegance, intellect, determination, wit and civic responsibility.

This woman of distinction dedicated her life to empowering the lives of others, as an educator, activist, and community volunteer.

She was born in Burke County, Georgia, September 22, 1918 to Henry and Ocia Colson Mack, the 8th of 9 children. Her siblings: Ora, Tom, Joe, Bruce, Waiters, Marion (Curley), Alberta, and Vernia (Tiny), all preceded her in death.

Thelma joined Historic Springfield Baptist Church at an early age and was an active member who once sang in the Gospel Choir and until her death, served on the Board of Trustees. She served as a member of the 2009 Minister's Search Committee.

Her high school career concluded as a graduate of the Haines Normal and Industrial Institute, Augusta, Georgia. She was an active member of the Haines Alumni.

"Tee" Mack received her undergraduate degree from Paine College, Augusta, Georgia and was an active member of the Augusta Alumni Association, a life member of the National Association and as a result of her financial contributions; she was a member of the President's Club. Her outstanding service to the college was acknowledged in 2003 when she received the Outstanding Service Award.

Her quest for knowledge led her to complete a Master of Arts Degree in History from Atlanta University, Atlanta, Georgia and she also attended Syracuse University for advanced studies. This education served as the basis for her 33 year career as a teacher of students from K-i2th grades. She left an indelible mark on her students in both Columbia and Richmond Counties and provided them with a lifelong thirst for learning.

Thelma Mack's ability to get things done in the community was noted by two mayors. Mayor Edward M. Mclntire appointed her to the Richmond County Coliseum Authority making her the first African American woman with this distinction. Mayor Charles A. DeVaney appointed her to the Appeals Board of the Planning and Zoning Commission where she served with distinction for 22 years. Mayor DeVaney also appointed her to the Board of Greater Augusta Arts Council.

Her volunteer efforts extended to delivering Meals on Wheels to the home bound, for the Augusta Department of Aging. Her volunteer services encompassed a Charter Memberships of Alumni and Friends Association New Bethlehem Center and the Laney Walker Development Corporation.

Thelma enjoyed grazing the smorgasbord of life which involved traveling throughout the USA including Alaska and The Hawaiian Islands, Canada, Nassau, Bermuda, Jamaica, Europe and three Scandinavian Peninsulas. Her laughter was contagious and her beautiful smile was the trade mark of this steel magnolia with her family and friends.

"Auntie" was most animated when talking to or about her daughter/niece, Tanya Bryant Patton

(Howard), grandson/nephew Geoffrey (Ewa) Anderson, and her "Boyz" great grandsons/nephews,

Robert (Bobby) Kay and Jonathan David. She will be forever remembered by relatives and friends.

She also leaves to cherish her memory and emulate her legacy a specially, devoted niece, who is her

mirrored image, Jeanette Mack Kelly, 7 other nieces and 6 nephews; 20 great nieces and nephews

and 18 great grand nieces and nephews, several cousins and a host of friends.
