Born on May 14, 1918, in Jenkins County, Georgia, she was the third child and first daughter to Deacon Charlie and Mrs. Mamie Davis Burroughs. At an early age, she took the place of her mother, caring for her sisters and brothers due to her mother's early death.
She attended the public schools of Burke County and left school to fill the shoes of her mother; however, she acquired an abundance of wisdom, walked in integrity and was a true believer of the Word, which she shared with those who came in contact with her. Her life was exemplified and personified by the teachings of her parents and the spiritual upbringing. All those who knew her found friendship, love and favor. She was employed as head of Culinary and Chief Pastry Cook for many years at Fort Gordon. Later, Mrs. Lewis joined the staff a Hilton Hotel, where she retired as head of
the Culinary Department and Pastry Expert.
