Autumn usually signals the coming of winter, but nature reversed itself a week before autumn in 1915; spring came into the lives of Austin and Cornelia M. Barksdale on September 1 3 when God, in His infinite wisdom, appointed them as the proud parents of a new daughter, Ola Bell. Ola Bell rang the bells of spring even though, according to the seasons, spring was two seasons ago. Reared in a devout Christian home, nurtured by loving and caring parents, Ola Bell Barksdale began to acquire "the whole armor" of spring; toughness to brace her like a taproot against the storms of life, elasticity to "spring" her back from the pitfalls of life, and wisdom to guide her through the circuitous pathways of life. Supported by three brothers, Floyd, Rufus, and Wilson, and two sisters, Louise and Mattie, she continued to grow in moral character and spiritual acumen. The love shared between her and her siblings was further preparation for the autumns and winters of life. After her birth, Ola Bell and her siblings were joined by two other brothers. Bennie and Harvey, and two other sisters, Florida and Azalee, thereby making the family larger and much stronger.
During her teenage years, Ola Bell joined the Ebenezer Baptist Church where she received further spiritual training. She received her secular training at the Smith Chapel School.
In December, 1 946, she was joined in holy matrimony to Mr. Samuel Kennedy. Two beautiful children, Sandra Ann and Glenda, were born to that marvelous union. Ola Bell and Samuels family was increased by the marriage of their daughter Glenda to Mr. Melvin H. Norman, to whom two sons, Mallory Hiram and Garland Kristopher, were born, and the marriage of their daughter Sandra to Mr. James A. Rouse, to whom one son, Jason Arzallis, and one daughter, Sherri Atrise, were born.
Ola Bell continued to grow in wit, in understanding, and in love. She shared these traits generously with friend and foe alike. She served faithfully as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Post 597, the Womens Mission, the Deacons Union Society, and as an ardent participant in senior citizens activities. She also served as a deaconess for over two decades at the White Rock Baptist Church. Her uncanny wit and humor will be told to generations yet unborn.
With the same infinite wisdom He used to "spring" Ola Bell into life as a forerunner of autumn on September 13, 1915, on November 22, 1992, the Great Spirit of the universe, an All Wise, All Merciful, All Loving, Omniscient, Omnipo tent, and Omnipresent God stretched out His hands through the storm to say to Ola Bell Barksdale Kennedy, "The storm is passin over, hal-le-lu . . ." Ola Bell ans wered, "Lord, here am I, send me."
Two loving and devoted daughters; four grandchildren; three sisters; two sonsin-law; four sisters-in-law, Daisy and Hattie Barksdale of Brooklyn, New York, Susie Barksdale of Martinez, and Christine Kennedy of Augusta; two brothers-in-law, Luther and Ralph Kennedy of Augusta; two special friends, Pearline Elam and Ernest Jones; and many other relatives and friends rejoice in the celebration of her heavenly life.

A Tribute
A million times we have needed her, A million times we have cried. If love alone could have spared her, She would have never died. If all the world was ours to give, We would give it, yes; and more, To see her coming up our steps, And walking through our door. To hear her voice, to see her smile, To sit and talk with her awhile. To be with her the same old way, Would be our fondest wish today. A heart ofgold stopped beating, Two smiling eyes closed to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.
