** OBITUARY **
Mrs. Ruth Ellis James of 2027 Milledgeville Road died Thursday, January 8, 1987 in St. Joseph Hospital, Augusta, Georgia.
Mrs. James, daughter of the late Reverend and Mrs. James S. Ellis, was a native Augustan. She was a graduate of Haines Normal and Industrial Institute, Johnson C. Smith University, and New York University. Her teaching career began in Belton, South Carolina, and from there she taught at Voorhees in Denmark, S.C. After working in Gough, Georgia, and Mount Vernon, Georgia, she entered the Richmond County School System, where she taught until her retirement. At retirement she was a teacher of social studies at Thomas W. Josey High School, where she served as head of the department and advisor to the Shirley Chishom Chapter of the National Honor Society.
She was a member of the Johnson C. Smith University Alumni Club - having served as President, the local and National Retired Teachers Associations, the Womens Civic Club, and the Zeta Xi Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. For seven years she served on the Board of Directors of the Y WC A. She was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and for many years was active as an elder and clerk of the Session. As a member of the U.P.W. she provided leadership in many areas, chief among which was her volunteer work each month with a co-worker at the Georgia Regional Hospital.
Survivors one brother, Mr. James B. Ellis; one sister, Mrs. Lucille Ellis Floyd, Augusta, Ga.; two nephews, Dr. John Ellis Floyd, Athens, Ga. and Dr. Joseph Bernard Floyd, Stone Mountain, Ga.; mother-inlaw, Mrs. Mamie James; brother-in-law, Mr. John Gordon Floyd, Augusta, Ga.; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Erline Henderson, Birmingham, Ala. and Mrs. Ruby L. Ellis, Augusta, Ga.; four godchildren, two grandnieces, two grandnephews, two nieces-in-law, Mrs. Juanita Floyd, Athens, Ga. and Dr. Virginia Floyd, Stone Mountain, Ga. and a host of other relatives and friends.
