Jngtam -was a beacon to his family, friends and all those who knew him. He was born on June 1, 1923 to the late Ervin and Ada Bell Ingram in Opelika, Alabama. He departed this mortal life on Friday, December 1, 2000 at Doctor s Hospital and took on and eternal life ofjoy, happiness and contentment.
Silas accepted Christ early in life and was baptized in Opelika; he served diligently in his church until he relocated to Augusta, Georgia in the early 1950 s. He served his country in the United States Armyfor three years, most ofthat time during the European Theater of Operation in World War II.
He was married to Willie Mae Perry Ingram for 47 happy and memorable years. To this christlike union three children were born, one preceded him in death, Sheila.
He attended the public schools of Opelika, Alabama and graduated with honors from high school. Silas continued his questfor education and entered Morehouse College. . . there he received the Bachelor s ofArts Degree. Upon completing his B.A. degree, he taught in his hometown for two years. Adventurous and eager to venture into new waters, he decided to accept the position ofinsurance agentfor the Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company; thereby, moving to Augusta. As he watched the youth of his surroundings and neighborhood and eager to assist in the growth and development of young minds, he decided to reenter the field of education. Again, he embarked upon the voyage of higher education and completed his Master s degree at Atlanta University and the Six Year Specialist Degree at Georgia Southern University. Ingram worked as a seventh grade teacher at Ursula Collins Elementary Schoolfor several years. Being totally committed to serving humanity, he involved himself in those components of the church, the workforce and organizations that supported efforts to elevate mankind. Mr. Ingram was afaithful member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where he served as an ardent member of the board of trustees; treasurer of the Credit Union and a dedicated and out spoken voice for Christ in the New Era Sunday School Class, even in a meek and mild manner. He energized the minds of boys and girls not only as a classroom teacher, but as an assistant principal at John M. Tutt Middle and Westside Comprehensive High schools and also as a mentor. He was a lifelong supporter ofMorehouse Alumni Association and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and served the Georgia Teachers Association unwaiveringfor many years. Silas was the recipient ofseveral service awards.
Survivors include his zealous wife, Willie Mae Perry Ingram; one son, Bruce Ingram, Frankfurt, Germany; one daughter, Phyllis I. Luciano, Stone Mountain, Georgia; one sister, Ethel Bell, Anniston, Alabama; two grandchildren, Danielle and Logon Luciano,
Stone Mountain, Georgia; mother-in-law, Verbenia Perry, Augusta, Georgia; one adopted niece/daughter, Mary Shears, Chicago, Illinois; one adopted brother, Johnny Bell Jackson, Opelika, Alabama, one sister-in-law, Thomasina (Clarence)Miller, Fort Valley, Georgia; one brother-in-law, Leonard Perry, Augusta, Georgia; and several nieces, nephews, cousins andfriends.
