O bituary
Dr. William Andrew Hunter (Andy) was born September 6, 1913 in North Little Rock, Arkansas. He was the first born o f William J. C. Hunter and Jessie Dorothy Berry Hunter. Andy graduated from Dunbar High School in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1931 and from Wilberforce University located in Ohio in 1936. He served as a Chemical/Warfare Instructor in the United States Army being honorably discharged in 1946. Andy graduated from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa receiving his Masters Degree in 1948 and his Ph.D. in 1952.
Dr. Hunter joined into holy matrimony with Alma Rose Burgess on June 6 ,1 9 3 8 . He began his teaching career at Dunbar High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was also an instructor at Dunbar Junior College. In 1950, Dr. Hunter became Assistant Professor o f Research and Statistics and Assistant Professor for the School o f Education at Tuskegee Institute. In 1957 he was appointed Acting Dean o f the School o f Education at Tuskegee Institute. In 1974, Dr. Hunter joined the staff o f Iowa State University and served as Professor o f Professional Studies, Director o f Research, and Professor o f Secondary Education. He retired as Professor o f Education, Emeritus, in 1983.
Dr. Hunter's professional organizations include the Alabama State Teacher Association, National Association o f Educators, Association o f Supervisor and Curriculum Development, Danforth Foundation, Advisory Board Early Child Education, American Association o f Colleges for Teachers Education, Teachers Programs Advisory Board, National Teachers Exam. Advisory Board, Council for Accrediting Teachers, Advisory Board for the Richmond County Board o f Education. He was a life member o f the NAACP.
Dr. H unter's memberships included the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., the Augusta Ambassadors Bridge Club, Tuskegee Civic Association, National Urban League, Wilberforce and Iowa State University Alumni Associations and the St. Mark United Methodist Church.
Dr. Hunter is survived by his wife, Alma Rose Burgess Hunter, a niece, Danice (Clarence) Byrd Mariney, a nephew, Dana J. (Cheryl) Byrd and other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
