OBITUARY
It is said that there are three words in the english vocabulary that are more solemn than all of the others. They are life, death and eternity. Life is more solemn than death; to live is more serious than to die. The object o f C hrist's death is life. A Christian's death gives them a more abundant life. Death is a joyful messenger o f peace whose whose kind hands open to the weary pilgrim the gate of imm ortality and lets the oppressed go free.
This our brother Arthur Houston whom departed this life June 21, 1987 at the U niversity Hospital was born the son o f the late Alfred and Georgia M organ Houston February 9, 1908.
At an early age, he was converted and baptized and joined the Spring Grove Baptist Church where he served faithfully until his passing. He served in many capacities o f the church. He served as chief of the U sher Board nearly 50 years, Superintendent of Sunday School many years, President of the Men and W omen Club, an ordained Deacon for 25 years, a mem ber of Simmons Lodge # 3-A, a member o f Young M en Society of Easy Street, President o f Evening Star Christmas Charity Club, and President of Sunday School Convention. Houston w as'nt a quitter for even under adverse conditions, he was on hand to offer w hatever help he could.
In the year 1933 on August 13, he was united in holy m atrim ony to the late Rebecca Taylor the daughter of the late Elijah and Carrie Glenn Taylor, and to this union seven children w ere born, two preceded him in death.
He leaves to cherish his memories one son, Mr. A rthur Houston, Jr.; four daughters, Mrs. Carrie Adams, Mrs. Catherine Acker, Mrs. Videria Hargrove and Mrs. M ary Partee all o f Brooklyn, New York; one goddaughter, Miss Vanessa Jones o f N orth Augusta, South Carolina; three sisters, Mrs. Addie Stafford o f M aintville, New Jersey, Mrs. Janie P.oberson of N orth Augusta, South Carolina and Mrs. M ary Sullivan o f Brooklyn, New York; one aunt, Mrs. Lily Jackson of Washington, D.C.; two sons-in-law; two daughters-in-law; sixteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren and a host o f nieces, nephews and other relatives and sorrowing friends.
