Reverend James Myles Hinton, Sr., 79, died on Saturday

November 21, 1970 in a local hospital in Augusta, Georgia after a

brief illness.

He was born in Gates County, North Carolina and was ed ucated in the public schools and the Bible Teachers Training School of New York City. He served his country in World War I as a Lieutenant and Machine Gun Officer at Camp Hancock, Georgia.

Mr. Hinton began his career in insurance in 1919 with the Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company. At the time of hi s retirement in 1965 he was Vice President and Agency Director. In 1966 he was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors. He pastored Second Calvary Baptist Church from 1959 until his death. Under his leadership a new church was built, the mortgage for which was burned several months ago.

He was widely known for active participation in public life having served as State President of South Carolina NAACP Chap ters for nearly nineteen years and was on the National Board for many years. During his years of service, both in Columbia and Augusta, he was in the forefront in every endeavor to promote the dignity of all men. At great personal sacrifice, and several times at the risk of personal injury, he championed the cause of black men and deprived people. He spoke in a moving, articulate, pass ionate manner as he appealed to all people to become instruments of good human relations, and to promote the dignity of ethnic groups.
Many of his other activities included chaplaincy at Craft-Far row Mental Hospital and South Carolina Correctional Institution,
Committeeman of the Alston Wilkes Society assisting Richfand County Family Court; a member of the Board of Directors of MidCarolina Mental Association, co-chairman of the Greater Columbia Community Relations Council and past president of Columbia Ministers Association. He was also a member of Small Business Administrations SCORE group.

Surviving are four children, James M. Hinton, Jr., Augusta, Georgia, Rodney H. Hinton, Washington, D.C., Mrs. DJaris Watson and Mrs. Novella Turner of New York City; a sister, Mrs. Mazie Moore, also of New York City, a brother, Elbert Hinton of Gates County, North Carolina and ten grandchildren.
