DOLLIE BERTIA GIVENS HEARD was born August 8, 1919 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late Weldon Givens and Mary Jane Givens of Augusta, Georgia.
She accepted God as her personal Lord and Savior at an early age, and became an active member of Thankful Baptist Church.
She attended and became a graduate of Haines Normal Institute. She then enrolled in Paine College in pursuit of a Bachelor's degree in Early Elementary Education. Upon completion of her degree she started her thirty-two year career in education at Charles T. Walker Elementary School.
In 1947, she met and married the love of her life, the late Charles E. Heard, Sr.
In 1948 she became a proud mother to her only child, Charles E. Heard, Jr. In 1951, she joined Immaculate Conception Church with her family. Upon the closure of Immaculate Conception Church, she then became a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, which later was renamed Most Holy Trinity. She worked faithfully with the Council of Catholic Women, the Ladies Sewing Group, Altar Guild, and other organizations until her husband's health started to fail. She was also a lifetime member of the Retired Teachers' Association.
Dollie leaves a legacy of memories to: her son, Charles E. Heard, Jr. (Bobbie) of Augusta, Georgia; two grandchildren, Chad E. Heard of Augusta, Georgia and Brandi N. Miller (Roderick) of Jonesboro, Georgia; two great grandchildren, Bryce C. Miller and Devin C. Miller of Jonesboro, Georgia; one sister-in-law, Alice Heard of Atlanta, Georgia; a devoted cousin, Ms. Lillie Patrick of Augusta, Georgia; and a host of nieces and nephews.
