Sara Alethia Vaughn was the fourth child and youngest surviving daughter of Alice Caldwell and John P. Vaughn. She entered this life on February 9, 1913.
Her childhood was spent in Columbia, South Carolina with nine siblings, Ella, William, Ruth, Ruben, John, Robert, Charles, Eugene, and Marian Alice. Ella, the eldest is now the only surviving sibling and resides in Milledgeville, Georgia
She attended the secondary schools in Richland County and furthered her training in primary education at Paine College in Augusta, Georgia.
On April 21,1935, she married James Franklin Hatcher and to this union was born one son, James, Jr.
Her God-given talent for teaching Kindergarten provided a 35 year occupation as Director of the Alice Caldwell Vaughn (ACV) Kindergarten which afforded her the unique opportunity to assist in the molding of many lives. Elementary School teachers always were happy to have the children from Mrs. Hatchers Kindergarten.
She joined Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia and was an active member until she moved to Milledgeville, Georgia in October 1996 due to advancing illness. During her days in Augusta, she served as Sunday School Teacher, BTU Secretary and Program Coordinator (James, Sr. was BTU Superintendent), Church Reporter, Junior Choir Director for 20 years, Instructor and Secretary of the Vacation Bible School, Secretary of Club No. 3 and later its President, member of the Senior Choir and Pastors Aid Club, member and President of the Deaconess Board.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of thirty-two years, James Franklin Hatcher, Sr. She leaves to mourn her passing, a devoted and loving son, Dr. James Franklin Hatcher, Jr., Milledgeville, Georgia; a loving sister, Mrs. Ella House, Milledgeville, Georgia; caring nieces, Mmes.
