Obituary
Sgt. Lynwood "Leroy" Harris was born September 15, 1930 as the first
child o f the late Foraker Harris and Katie Burrus of Fairfield, North Carolina. He married Georgia Mae Mitchell on July 23, 1958. They shared 40 years together before the Lord called her into eternal glory and he followed on May 18, 2012 from the VA Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia.
At an early age "Leroy" was baptized and joined the Star of Zion Disciples o f Christ Church in Fairfield, NC. He graduated and received his high school diploma from the Hyde County Training School, Sladesville, NC. Soon after, he served in the United States Army serving two tours o f duty from September 6, 1951 to September 5, 1953 and from July 17, 1954 to July 31, 1972. During his military service Sgt. Harris received the Bronze Star for Merit of Service between May 1, 1970 and February 1971 in Vietnam. He also received the Expeditionary Service Medal and other decorations for his service in the armed forces. Sgt. Lynwood L. Harris retired from Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia. While living in Augusta, he was civic minded and he cared about his family, and neighborhood. He formed softball teams with the neighborhood boys and was a mentor to many young people. He was a founding member o f the Eastside Improvement Committee in 1966 and a member of the AmVets Post 616. He was a member of the NAACP and participated with the Democratic Party in supporting candidates for local elections. Lynwood " Leroy" Harris joined the Mason at Lodge 26 in Washington, DC.
He leaves to mourn daughters, Hildreth Leverett - Augusta, GA.; Connie (Anthony) Allen - Oakridge, TN; Dosha (Ricky) Green - Augusta, GA and son Leonard Jeffery Key, South Haven, MS; Five grandchildren Jacquelyn D. Leverett, Markus Rhodes, N 'Kenge Green, Jeffery Key and Damonte Green; four sisters, Emma Harris - Waldorf, MD; Mellie Burrus Fairfield, NC; Flattie (Robert) Abner - Burtonsville, MD; Mamie (LeeAndrus) Brimmage - Scranton, NC and one brother Carl Willis Harris Greensboro, NC. His beloved brothers Chester (Chet) Harris and Weldon (Don) Harris preceded him in death. He also leaves one sister-in-law, Barbara Harris, Lanham, MD; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, and one god daughter Michele "Lynn" Jacobs Williams and one god son David Bernard Reeves, Augusta, Georgia.
