Obituary

In his infinite wisdom, the Lord brought forth a child, Cordelia, to John and Willie Mae Gunter on December 24, 1950 in Augusta, GA. He commissioned her to work unceasingly in his vineyards until Saturday, August 5, 2006 when he called her home to her reward after a brief hospitalization at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA.

During her sojourn on the earth, Cordelia Punkin carried out her Christian, spiri tual, social and educational duties with an abundance of love, dedication and commit ment. She accepted Christ at the age of 10 joining the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. George C. Williams. Cordelia faith fully served Gods people through the ministry of song, as a member of G. C. Williams Gospel Choir, Sanctuary and Senior Choirs, and through the ministry of giving as a deaconess, youth teacher, pro gram coordinator, secretary, and mission ary.

Cordelia was educated in the public schools of Augusta-Richmond County. She graduated from Lucy C. Laney High School (1968) and received a B. A. in Edu cation from Paine College (1972). She taught in McDuffie County (Dearing Ele mentary School-1973-80) and AugustaRichmond County (T. Harry Garrett Ele mentary School-1980-84 and the John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School 19842005) for more than thirty years. She retired from Davidson in May 2005 as a Middle School Teacher. Throughout her

career she touched thousands of lives. She served as Student Council advisor, National Junior Honor Society advisor, Georgia Humanities Council History Day mentor, and volunteer for other student groups. She was a member of the Richmond County Association of Educators, the Georgia Association of Educators and the Tau Gamma Delta Professional Sorority.
