Quietly and peacefully, our dearly beloved Mr. Arthur Ishmael Goodwin, Sr., affectionately called "Brother Boy" and "Pop," was called to his heavenly home on Sunday afternoon, August 29, 2004.
Arthur was born in Richland County on October 8, 1927 in Columbia, South Carolina to the late Ishmael and Mattie Edith Toliver Goodwin. Arthur was predeceased by one sister, Lisha Mae Jones and two brothers, James Albert and Charles Goodwin. He was united in Holy Matrimony to Margaret Sims Goodwin and to this union one child, Arthur Goodwin, Jr., was born.
Arthur was a most faithful and dedicated member of Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church, where he dutifully served with love until his health started to decline. He was a member of the Brotherhood Club, formerly served as president, member of the Jubilee Choir and formerly serving as treasurer, a member of the Pastor's Aide Society and he served for many years as a Corinthian Mason.
Arthur grew up in the Arthurtown section of Columbia and attended Booker T. Washington High School. He joined the U. S. Navy, where he was stationed on the U. S. S. Curtis A-V-4 Naval Ship in 1946. After completing his military service, he was employed for thirty-five (35) years by the United States Postal Service where he became a member of the Retired Postal Mail Handlers Local # 334.
Mr. Arthur Ishmael Goodwin, Sr. leaves to cherish his warm and precious memory: his devoted wife of forty-nine (49) years, Mrs. Margaret Sims Goodwin; one son, Arthur Goodwin, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Kathy Wood Goodwin; three grandchildren, Arthur "Trey" (Terreus D.) Goodwin, III, Armand Ishmael Goodwin and Armir Austin Goodwin; two great-grandchildren, Carmia M. and Armoni T. Goodwin; one brother-in-law, Henry M. Sims; two sisters-in-law, Esther Ruth Sims and Hattie M. Sims; six nieces; five nephews; and a host of loving cousins, relatives and friends.

When I must leave you for a little while Please do not grieve and shed wild tears, And hug your sorrow to you through the years... But start out bravely with a gallant smile;
Andfor my sake and in my name Live on and do all things the same. Feed not your loneliness on empty days, But fill each waking hour in useful ways, Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer And I in turn will comfort you and hold you near. And never, never be afraid to die, For I am waitingfor you in the sky!

D on't grievefor me, for now I 'm free Fm following the path God has laid you see.
1 took His hand when I heard His call I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day
To laugh, to love, to work, or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way Ifound the peace at the close o f the day.
I f my parting has left a void Thenfill it with rememberedjoys A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss Oh yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times o f sorrow, I wish you the sunshine o f tomorrow. My life's beenfull, I savored much, Goodfriends, good times, a loved one's touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, D on't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart, andpeace to theeGod wanted me now; He has set mefree.
