DOCTOR "DOC" GARRICK was born in Gadsden, South Carolina on May 22, 1917. He was the son of the late Beverly and Margaret Sims Garrick. He died Wednesday, December 11, 2002 at Palmetto Richland Medical Center after an extended illness.
At an early age, Doc joined Saint Mark Baptist Church. He was a faithful, humble member and regularly attended services until his health began to decline. He was educated in the public school of Richland County.
Doc was a veteran of the United States Army serving from 1941-1945. He was briefly listed as MIA (Missing In Action ) in Europe during World War II. He was later found safe and was able to complete his tour of duty before being honorably discharged.
After his military service, Doc returned home to the Gadsden community to begin his career as a gardener with the University of South Carolina. He served the University in that capacity for twenty-five years before retiring in 1980. He was an avid gardener and especially loved the time spent outdoors. He was also known around the Gadsden community for providing transportation services to work for those needing assistance.

After Glow
I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one,
I'd like to leave an after flow of smiles when life is done.
I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways.
Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.
I'd like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun.
Of happy memories that I leave when life is done.
