Obituary
MATTIE SIMS GARDNER was born on May 28, 1911 in Augusta, Georgia to the late John H. Sims and Alice Germany Sims. She was married to the late Edward Gardner. She was called to be with the Lord on October 17, 2012 at the University Hospital, Augusta, Georgia.
Mattie received her education in Richmond County and graduated from Walker Baptist Institute, Augusta, Georgia. She soon became an employee of the Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company. Upon retirement, she had more than forty years of service.
Her spiritual training came early and she was baptized at TJbernacle Baptist Church. Mattie was among the crowd that marched from the old church on Ellis Street to their new location on Laney Walker Boulevard. She served faithfully in various ministries: Quilting, the Mother's Ministry, and in earlier years, the Kitchen Ministry. Always seeking knowledge, she was a Sunday School member of the Lydia Bible Class.
Described by one friend as a humble spirit, quick to help and volunteer where needed without fanfare. Two agencies, the Downtown Cooperative Church Ministries Food Bank, and the Shiloh Comprehensive Community Center, benefited from her untiring service. Mattie was recognized on local television for her outstanding work at Shiloh in the area of arts, crafts, quilting and sewing. Mattie thoroughly enjoyed her days at Shiloh and volunteered at DCCM until age 99.
Survivors are: a brother, Robert A. Sims of Augusta, Georgia; nephews, Marion S. Sims and Robert A. Sims, II (Christianne) of Detroit, Michigan; great nieces, Christianne Sims of Detroit Michigan and Roberta A. Sims of Trumbull, Connecticut; devoted cousins, Mamie C. Dunn (Jam es) of Augusta, Georgia and Nellie C. Hampton (Oyama); godson, William Smith; goddaughter, Lydia Prince; and additional loving cousins and friends.
