Jewel LaVerne Johnson Foster, beloved daughter of Ruth and the late Royal Johnson departed this life on April 23, 1999. Born in Richmond, Virginia on June 22, 1932, Jewel was the fifth of eight children. Jewel had a particularly close relationship with her late Aunt Marie Knight who she credited with caring for her during her very early years.

An excellent student, Jewel skipped a grade before graduating from Morris High School in Bronx, New York in 1950. In 1952 Jewel married her one and only love and childhood sweetheart, Aubrey Augustus Foster. .. ,-- . -.,-., . . r * .- . : % , :.-... . v: ., .-. . ,.-..-,.-.. -

Their first daughter, LaVerne Rene was born shortly thereafter followed

by Dianah Lynn and Audrey Ramona. Jewel stayed home to raise her

girls returning to work part-time at Alexanders when LaVerne entered

school. She remained at Alexanders for twenty years earning many

promotions and finally retiring as the money room manager.

\

Her retirement didnt last long however. A restless Jewel returned to the Workforce securing a position at Midland Bank. Her superb skills at money management allowed her to rise through the ranks. After 10 years, Jewel retired from Midland Bank to care for her youngest grandchild, aptly named after her. The last two years of Jewels life were filled with the joy of caring for her beloved Alexandra Jewel.

Jewel loved to travel, shop, garden and decorate her home. She traveled throughout the world, yet her favorite vacation spot was closer to home in Wildwood, New Jersey. It was a place where she found peace and enjoyed the closeness of her family. Her home was an immaculately kept showpiece yet it was still warm, comfortable and inviting. Jewel had an extraordinary eye for color as well as a sixth sense for finding a good bargain. She often showered her family and friends with the many fruits of her bargain-hunting. Yet the true joy in Jewels life was her family and friends. She maintained a wall of pictures marking weddings, graduations, births, and other important events.

Left to celebrate Jewels life and mourn her passing are her mother, Ruth Johnson; husband, Aubrey; mother-in-law, ZuDora Harris; brothers and sisters, Aileen, Royal, Delores, Emory, Mariene, Wallace, Robert; daughters, LaVerne, Dianah, Audrey; son-in-law Mack, grandchildren, Saran, Kimberly, Daryl, Matthew, Alexandra Jewel; her aunt, Lottie; many nieces and nephews and a host of very close relatives and friends.
