Deacon Herman Wesley Wright Fennell, the first of seven children, was bom in Allendale, South Carolina to the late Wesley Wright and the late Mrs. Rosa Johnson Fennell on July 21, 1910. He died on September 9, 1996, at Beverly Manor Convalescent Center, Augusta, Georgia.
Mr. Fennell received his early education at Allendale County Training School and Morris College. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Benedict College in 1935 and his Master of Science Degree in Secondary Education from South Carolina State University in 1957. He did post graduate work in Administration at Temple University and the University of South Carolina.
Mr. Fennell's early work experiences included helping on the family farm. He was also a tailor shop worker, candy company employee and special delivery boy. Mr. Fennell began his professional career as a teaching principal in Yemassee, South Carolina. He served there from 1935 to 1941 - Mr. Fennell served as supervising principal in the Honea Path - Belton area, Anderson County, South Carolina from 1941 - 1956. He served as principal of Jefferson High School and Jefferson Junior High School, Bath from 1956 to 1974. His principalship at Jefferson Junior High was served during the first difficult years of racial integration of Aiken County Schools. Mr. Fennell completed 39 years as an educator in the public schools of South Carolina. He was a member of the Aiken County Education Association, the Palmetto Education Association, the South Carolina Education Association, and the National Education Association.
Manifesting a keen interest in civic and human improvement, Mr. Fennell served his community enthusiastically. He was President of the Board of Directors, Area Council on Aging; and a member of the Aiken County Planning Commission and the Valley Public Service Authority. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels and the Valley Food Pantry. He was scout master and an honorary member of the New Farmers of America.
Deacon Fennell was an active and dedicated member of Young Storm Branch Baptist Church, Langley, South Carolina. He served as Deacon, member of the Senior Choir, Chairman of the Building Committee, Sunday School Superintendent, and volunteer driver of the elderly. In 1990, Mr. Fennell joined the Tabernacle Baptist Church. He served as Deacon and was member of the July Birth Month Club and the New Era Bible Class.
Mr. Fennell is survived by a loving wife of 57 years, Eddye Taylor Fennell; one son, Dr. Wesley Wright Fennell, Asheboro, NC; two daughters, Dr. Marshal Fennell Harris, Bath, SC and Judith Fennell Ruffin, Augusta, GA; one brother, Joseph Thomas Fennell, Opa Locka, FL; two sisters, Eunice Fennell Peterson, Philadelphia, PA and June Fennell, Bath, SC; five grandchildren; one son-in-law, Judge John H. Ruffin, Jr., Augusta, GA; two sisters-in-law, Juanita Fennell, Opa Locka, FL and Johnnye Thompson, Lawrenceville, VA; two brothers-in-law, Johnny Peterson, Philadelphia, PA and Joseph Thompson, Jr., Lawrenceville, VA; and a host of other relatives and friends.

We therefore in giving him back to Thee, Dear Lord, sorrowfully say - "There he goes." We realize that those on the other shore, with open arms, will pick up the chant andjoyfully say, "Here he comes."
