A courageous, dedicated, family oriented ray of sunshine, MARY DALLAS EVANS, "SWEETENING," of 2905 Abelia Drive, Augusta, Georgia 30906, was called home Sunday morning, March 6, 2011.
Mary was born in Lincolnton, Georgia, the youngest of three daughters on November 4, 1933 to Mr. Ernest and Mrs. Simmie (Garnett) Dallas. The family relocated to Florence Street, next door to the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, where Mary grew up in the shadow of the Antioch and Florence Street community. She married at an early age, and from this union came two children, Sammie Eli Evans and Edith Leavonia EvansHorton, which both preceded her in going home. Mary became a member of Antioch early in life and remained a faithful member until her departure from this earthly world.
"Sweetening" touched many lives and was a giving and caring, family oriented member of the Dallas and Garnett families, and the Augusta Community. She was noted for her culinary skills and event planning expertise. She loved to travel, shop, cook and meet people.
Mary served as a healthcare professional at Gracewood State Hospital for over twenty-eight years. Her professionalism, skill, and expertise touched many lives and left a lasting impression on all. She developed a special bond with her fellow employees, loving those she worked with as well as those clients she serviced. She founded the Second Thursday Friends (a Gracewood retiree's social club) in 1983 after her retirement and served as its President until 2009. She was a dedicated member of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and was committed to serving in the Food Pantry Ministry for many years.
She leaves to mourn and cherish her memory: a devoted sister, Mrs. Ruby Dallas Ridley of Augusta, GA; a devoted and cherished son-inlaw, Major (Retired) Jimmie Horton of Atlanta, GA; a loving grandson, Wesley James Horton; granddaughter, Avery Sinclair Horton of Atlanta, GA; goddaughter, Mary Edith Reed of Martinez, GA; extended family and support system, Mrs. Christine (John) Thomas, Mrs. Vivian Brown, Lieutenant Herman Brown, Mrs. Pam Glover, Mr. Jerry Glover and Mrs. Gwen and Mr. Leonard McCrary Jr. and The Second Thursday Friends; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

The Second Thursday Lriends
O Beautiful Woman o f God, what an example you are . . . You worship G od for who He is, allowing Him to deliver from all fears You praise Him for the things He does, you wait on G od before you act
So you'll know how to proceed with praise and tact You reverence G od's power, G od's anointing and G od's presence
Which gives your life its very essence! O Beautiful Woman o f G od, you are so beautiful, so gentle and so kind
You are forgiving all the time, you are an example o f God's light Letting it shine through both day and night
Building others through love, showing them each day Teaching by example, a more excellent way!
The love, concern, and care shown during Mary's declining years are truly a blessing and we thank you so very much! Special thanks to the staff of Lirst Love Assisted Living Home, The Place at Deans Bridge Rehabilitation Center and University Hospital!
