Reflections o f the Life O f 5Ur. JLer6ert D o d f Jr.
Herbert Dodd, Jr. was bom on March 21, 1930, in New Prospect, South Carolina to Herbert Dodd, Sr. and Myrtle Copeland Dodd Bernard. In 1949, he graduated from Spartan burg County Training School (Lincoln High School). Herbert enrolled at South Carolina State University (SCSU). He was initiated into Beta Delta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. in 1952 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. Additionally, he performed graduate studies at North Carolina A&T University and South Carolina State University.
Herbert was a school teacher in Spartanburg County, where he reunited with his college friend and future wife, Sammye Good. They entered into holy matrimony in 1955 and three children were bom to this union: Anthony, Jonathan, and Donna.

In 1955, Herbert reported to the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. He

became a senior paratrooper in the Army Airborne Infantry. He was

hon

orably discharged as Captain in 1957. Herbert worked as a social worker and a

director in Columbia, South Carolina. He later transferred to Atlanta and retired

as the Chief of Southern States Employment and Training Division in 1994 with

the U.S. Department of Labor.

Herbert was a member of Trinity AME Church where he was past president of the Investment Club and a member of the Steward board. He was a Life mem ber of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, past president of SCSU Atlanta Alumni Association and Continental Colony Community Association, member of The Joymen Club, and a Boy Scouts of America Executive for Troops 203 and 545.

On April 16, 2007, Herbert answered God's call and transitioned from this life. He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Dodd, Sr. (1952) and brother. James Dodd Sr. (1960). He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife, Sammye Good Dodd; two sons, Anthony Sr. (Marcia) and Jonathan; one daughter, Donna (Rodney); grandchildren, Anastasia, Anthony Jr., Keenan, and Nyla; mother, Myrtle Copeland Dodd Bernard; sisters, Earlene Dodd Griffin (Hershel), Geneva Dodd Smith, Sarah Dodd Bul-
ter (Homer), Betty Dodd Lloyd, Annie Dodd Moore, Mary Dodd Woods (Fred), and Shirley Dodd Booker (Joseph); sisters-in-law, Beulah Turner Dodd. Johnnie Good Mazyck (Ernest), Sarah Good Brown, and Yvonne Martin Good; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Herbert's love and keen sense of humor was free flowing to all. He will be remembered by many who were blessed enough to have witnessed his zestful exuberance for life. He will be greatly missed and remembered for his quote "You Can't Keep A Good Man Down."

"The Way to Win"
\
It takes a little courage and a little self-control With a grim determination if you want to reach the goal.
It takes a deal of striving with a firm and stem set chin No matter what the battle, if you're really out to WIN.
There's no easy road to glory, there's no rosy road to fame Life however you may view it, its no simple parlor game.
Its prizes call for fighting with endurance and grit Withkvrough disposition and I don't know when to quit.
You must take a blow and give one, you must risk and you must loose And expect that in this struggle you will suffer from a bruise.
Now you mustn't wince nor falter, when a fight you once begin; Be a man and face the battle, it's the only way to WIN.
