--OBITUARY--
Richard Algernon Dent, affectionately called "Papa Dent," the son of the late Benjamin J. and Annie Gertrude Dent, was born April 25, 1905, in Keysville, Burke County, Georgia. At an early age, he moved with his parents to Augusta, Georgia, and received his elementary education in the Public Schools of Richmond County. He graduated from Walker Baptist Institute in 1924 and did further study at Paine College. He confessed religion at an early age and was baptized by Dr. C. T. Walker in Tabernacle Baptist Church. In later years he was ordained as a Deacon and became a member of the choir, which is now called the Senior Choir. He served faithfully in both of these organizations until his death.
Deacon Dent was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1966. Here he served faithfully for sixteen years before resigning in March 1982 because of ill health. During his tenure in the House, he was a member of the Ways and Means Committee, the Highways Committee and he served as Chairman of the Human Relations and Aging Committee. He also served as Chairman of the Augusta Richmond County Legislative Delegation. For more than fifty years he owned and operated a successful floor covering business. He was affiliated with the Chamber of Commerce, the Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Authority and the Sportsmans Boat Club.
