** OBITUARY **
Melvin Bernard Davis, Ph.D., 36, son of Mrs. Carole Dent Davis and the latejam es A. Davis of Silver Spring, Maryland passed on Thursday, September 20,1984, in Tacoma Park, Maryland. Dr. Davis was a native Augustan and a member of the Church of the Most Holy Trinity. He received his elementary education in Richmond County, attended Boggs Academy in Keysville, Georgia and was graduated from Lucy C. Laney High School in 1965 where he served as Senior Class President. He received his undergraduate degree from Paine College, a masters degree from Howard University and a doctorate from American University. He was a member of thejohn F. Kennedy Council 5484 and thejohn F. Kennedy Fourth Degree Assembly.
Dr. Davis modeled for the Washington, D.C. based F.O.R.D. Enterprises. He commentated football half-time shows as well as fashion events. Additionally, he was a television spokesperson in segments on important blacks in America's history. In 1982, Dr. Davis was selected as one of the Outstanding Young Men of America.
Dr. Davis began his teaching career at Lucy C. Laney and was Assistant Band Director. His talents as an entertainment organizer were exemplified by his work as choreographer. Dr. Davis server as Choreographer for the Augusta Adult Society's Annual Debutant Ball for 1974-76. In addition, he was choreographer for the Lucy C. Laney High School Marching Band and Director-Choreographer for the dance unit, the Ikettes. Both were nationally acclaimed and represented the State of Georgia to the seccond inaugeration of Richard Nixon as a show band.
During his undergraduate study at Paine College he produced several musical events that benefited the United Negro College Fund. In 1970, he wrote and produced "The Psychedelic Shack," which was shown in Augusta, and encouraged high school students to stay in school; "Bridge Over Troubled Water" parts I and II followed a year later, playing to standing room only crowds in the Performing Arts Theatre of Augusta College.
He later joined the faculty of the Richard Montgomery High School, in Rockville, Maryland, where he was employed until his death.
In his seven years at Richard Montgomery High School, Dr. Davis produced, "Stepping With Chique" in 1982; highly acclaimed "Thriller" in 1983; and "Easin to Oz," in 1984.
As yearbook adviser at Richard Montgomery, he produced two award winning yearbooks. The 1984 edition was selected by Inter-Collegiate Press of Shawnee Mission, Kansas, and is being used as a sample book of unusual journalistic quality and will be used as a guide for other schools throughout the nation.
He is survived by his mother; one brother, Alonzo Bailey, Sr., Westbury, N.Y.; four aunts; Catherine Davis, Atlanta, Ga., Freida Dent Davis, Far Rockaway, N.Y., Elizabeth D. Monroe, Augusta, Ga., and Bettie D. Hankerson, New York, N.Y.; one uncle, Albert Dent, Evanston, 111.; godparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pounds, Augusta, Ga.: and a host of other relatives and friends.
