The angels entered the hospital room of Mr. James Anderson Davis, Sr. and closed his eyes to sleep Wednesday, January 8, 1 9 8 6 .
Mr. Davis was born June 2 0 , 1 9 1 2 in Vidette. Burke County to the late Norris and Marie Davis. Active in every facet of his community, Mr. Davis was an ordained Deacon of the St. Paul Baptist Church. He served on the Senior Choir, Pulpit Committee and worked faithfully with the youth department.
Mr. Davis graduated from Walker Baptist in 1 9 3 2 , Florida Normal Industrial Institute, St. Augustine, Florida in 1 9 3 4 . Ambitions to become a doctor became difficult because of finances, but after medicine and science courses, he decided on the funeral profession in 1938.
With the struggle to make a living he served as both assistant principal and coach at the Jefferson County Training School, worked in the pulpwoocl business, and transported workers to Camp Gordon, where he was a foreman in construc tion work. He also operated a dry cleaning plant on New Street, and a Grocery store on Hill Street. Closing all doors when World W ar II began, he reopened the doors of Davis Funeral Home in 1 9 4 8 in a new building where he was owner and operator since that time. He was a member of several professional organizations. For over thirty five years he served as a member of the National Funeral Directors and Morticians Association, the Fifth District National Funeral Directors and Morticians Associations, the Georgia Funeral Service Practitioners Association and the Sixth District Funeral Service Practitioners Association where he served as past president and was voted Man of the Year in 1 9 7 5 . At the time of his passing, he was serving as chaplain. He held memberships in several civic organizations including the Jefferson Co. Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and served as a bondsman for many years. He was appointed Lieutenant Colonel Aide De Camp Governor's Staff by Governor Jimmy Carter, and by Governor George Busbee. Survivors include; his wife, Margaret Virginia Farmer Davis, Louisville, Georgia; four daughters, Carolyn Marie Crew, Atlanta, Ga., Mary Louise Kelly, Baltimore, Maryland, Maria Jane Scarlett, Hephzibah, Ga., Kathy Marion Hannah, Louisville, Ga.; two sons, James Arthur Davis, Leisure City, Fla., and Lonzie Davis Jr., Homestead, Fla.; and one adopted son, Noah Thomas Swint, Louisville, Ga.; two sisters, Robbie Doll Johnson, Bronx, N.Y., and Sally Louise Dix, Aiken, S.C .; two brothers, Willie Davis, Corona, N.Y., and Walter Davis, Augusta, Ga.; four sons-in-law, John Crew of Atlanta, Ga., John Kelly of Baltimore, Maryland, Carlton Scarlett of Hephzibah, G a., Lee Odell Hannah, Jr. of Louisville, G a.; three daughters-in-law, Laura Lloyd Davis of Leisure City, Florida, Mildred Gibbons Davis of Homestead, Florida, Catherine Turner Swint of Louisville, Georgia; six brothers-in-law; eight sisters-in-law; twentytwo grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
