DOROTHY PEARL POT'S DAGGETT entered into heavenly peace on Mother's Day, Sunday May 8, 2011, at University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia, leaving a beautiful legacy of love and dedicated service. Dot, as she was affectionately known, was one of eight children born to Roland Ross and Lille Pitts on December 5,1928, in Macon, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings: Roland, Vernon, Juanita, Vera, Lincoln, Dolores (her twin), and Phalba.
She received her secondary education in the public schools of Macon, where she was a graduate of Ballard-Hudson High School. Dorothy continued her education at Paine College in Augusta, Georgia, where she earned a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Home Economics in 1950. She was very active at Paine and was crowned Miss Homecoming in 1948. She furthered her studies at Fort Valley State College in Ft. Valley, Georgia. Dorothy began an illustrious and unparalleled teaching career in the Jones County Public School System. She continued her beloved profession in the Richmond County School System, where retiring in 1985, concluding a career which spanned more than 30 years.
Throughout her life, Dot remained very active with numerous organizations. She was a member of the National Association of University Women (NAUW), where she was a past officer and committee chairperson; a member of the Augusta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for 33 years, of which she was a charter member; and a member of the Paine College Alumni Association. For over 57 years, she was a faithful and committed member of the Church of Saint Mary's The Virgin Episcopal Church. She loved her church and could be counted on to provide delicious meals and to ensure that the church was prepared for Sunday services.
Dorothy married her soul mate, Henry R. Daggett, on September 1,1951. To this union was born two sons: Ricardo (Ricky) and Raoul. Her family was the center of her life. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, godmother, and friend. She never met a stranger. Dorothy loved working crossword puzzles, talking on the phone to her close friends, shopping, and just enjoying the company of family and friends. She and her neighbors had such a close and warm relationship that you often could find them talking, sharing, and walking. Dorothy was a very loving godmother who never forgot a birthday and always celebrated her godchildren's accomplishments.
As she struggled with declining health, one of God's earthly angels was sent to assist her in so many ways - Mrs. Gracie Hampton. In large part, it was Mrs. Hampton's devoted care and love that helped sustain Dorothy through this most difficult period. Dot loved Gracie as a daughter and they developed a special bond. Dorothy will be sorely missed by all the lives she touched because of her caring and thoughtful nature and her gentle and giving spirit. Although her work here on earth is done, her legacy will live through the numerous family, friends, and students who benefitted from her unconditional love and unwavering devotion. God knew she was tired and he needed another radiant angel. What better devoted servant than Dorothy Pearl to call to His service.
