MRS. OLA MAE CURTIS was born to the late Plezen and Mattie Whigham on October 16,1912, in Wadley, Georgia. She was raised in a religious and God fearing home. Because of her religious upbringing, she acquired an appreciation for doing the work of a virtuous Christian woman.
Mrs. Curtis received her formal education from Batts Grove Elementary and Wadley High Schools in Jefferson County. Upon completion of her secondary education, she enrolled in the Log Cabin Institute where she studied the education of young minds. Having acquired a love for children, Mrs. Curtis became gainfully employed by the Grange Community School in Jefferson County.
After Holy Matrimony to her husband Willie Curtis, they moved to Augusta, Georgia. To this union, they happily welcomed slx young children. Mrs. Curtis' most important job was being a mother to her four sons and two daughters. She strongly believed in education and encouraged her children to excel in school. You could always count on her to be active in school related activities.
Mrs. Curtis accepted the Lord as her Savior at an early age and joined Live Oak C.M.E. Church in Wadley, Georgia. Having a love for working with the Missionary Society, she continued after joining Bethel A.M.E. Church upon relocating to Augusta. Her other affiliations were the Stewardess Board and the Happy Bunch. Ola was an active member until her recent decline in health.
After the death of her husband, she worked full time in the family grocery store, Curtis Grocery. Customers admired her personality and charm in how she welcomed them. She was also an active member in the Eastern Star. She loved working with the youth and going to county and state meetings.
Ola was extremely family oriented. She loved being in the presence of her children and grandchildren. Sister Curtis was preceded in death by her husband and son, Willie Curtis and Alvin Curtis.
