Obituary
Mrs. Izenia Cook passed away Tuesday, September 28, 2010 in Augusta, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, Thomas C. Cook, and sons-inlaw, Elliott E. Franks, III and Dr. Paul D. Weston.
Educated in Aiken County public schools, she completed high school two years ahead of schedule. She attended Voorhees School and Junior College but completed her Bachelor's Degree at Allen University. She received a Masters Degree in Education at the University of South Carolina and began ^a fruitful, forty year career at Aiken and Edgefield County Public Schools. Subsequent to her retirement from educating elementary students, Mrs. Cook taught at Paine College. 'She touched the lives of countless students at varying grade levels. Former students still recognized her up until her death.
Mrs. Cook was a fervent participant and supporter of the Aiken Democratic Party. She analyzed the current political climate critically and enjoyed watching C-SPAN and the Sunday morning news shows. She never missed casting a ballot in every election nor did she miss working faithfully at the polls.
Mrs. Cook was a voracious reader and had a quenchless thirst for knowledge. She was a Zora Neale Hurston scholar and a strong advocate of African American literature and the arts. She enjoyed studying theories on the history of Christianity and was very familiar with the books of the Bible.
Mrs. Cook stressed the importance of education to her children and grandchildren and helped teach each one to read at an early age. Also, Izenia enjoyed playing the piano and being a member of St. Mary Episcopal Church. Mrs. Cook was a well cultured, well read, and well rounded woman who loved her family.
She leaves to mourn her passing her three children: Angela Franks, Ida Weston and Dion Cook (Lisa); ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a cousin, Reverend Willie Green (Alice) of Chicago, Illinois; two sisters-in-law, Rosetta Cooks of Maryland and Ella Permint of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and her dedicated caretaker Tawanna Madison.
