James Edward Conner
March 21, 1929 - November 2} 2004
On November 2, 2004, God sent His angel of transition to call from labor to eternal reward the soul of His servant, James Edward Conner. James, the eldest son of the late James and Arletha Davis Conner, was born on March 21, 1929 in Marion County, South Carolina. When he became school age, he lived and was raised by his aunt and uncle, the late Mary Jane and Todd Isreal.
James attended the Public Schools of Marion County, and graduated from Alien University, Columbia, South Carolina in 1951. After graduation, he taught Chemistry in Edgefield, South Carolina before being inducted into the United States Army. His two years of service included serving in the Korean Conflict. Upon discharge, he returned home and registered for Graduate School at Columbia University in New York. Before being accepted into graduate school, he was offered a job at Duponts Savannah River Laboratory working in Research with one of his College Professors, Dr. Ed Russell. He moved to Aiken, South Carolina and began working at Dupont in June, 1953. He retired in 1989, but remained a consultant for Westinghouse until April, 1991.
On October 13, 1953, he met Gussie Elizabeth Brayboy on a blind date. Eight months later, on June 13, 1954, he and his "blind date" were united in marriage. This union was blessed with two daughters, Velyna Elizabeth and Weyta Louise.
James accepted Christ as his savior and joined the Wise Chapel AME Church in Marion, South Carolina. In August, 1954, he joined Thankful Baptist Church and was baptized by the late Reverend N.T. Young, Sr. At Thankful, he served as a Boy Scout Leader, Trustee, member and former Chairman of the Board of Deacons, President of the Gospel Choir for 49 years, Sunday School teacher of the Brayboy Bible Class for 45 years, Senior Citizens Group and member of the Executive Board for the Vision 2000 committee. After his retirement in 1991, he set aside two days each week to visit the sick and shut-in members of the church.
Also after retiring, James served as the first President of the Laney

Walker Development Corporation. It was during his term that the Armstrong Galleria, Phase I was constructed. He served the community well until his health began to fail.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Alien Conner, Sr. and Carl Richard Conner. Cherishing precious memories are his soul-mate Gussie, his children Velyna Elizabeth and Frank W Johnson, Jr. of Alpharetta, Georgia, and Weyta Louise and Michael W Malone of New Orleans, Louisiana; two grandchildren Michael W Malone, Jr. of New Orleans, Louisiana and Joya Elizabeth Johnson of Alpharetta, Georgia; one sister Mildred Conner Jordan of Raleigh, North Carolina; five brothers and their wives Eugene and Irma Conner of Oyster Bay, New York, Jule and Barbara Conner of Marion, South Carolina, Arthur and Earnestine Conner of Paterson, New Jersey, Harry and Jacequalyn Conner of Alpharetta, Georgia, and Earnest and Brenda Conner of Marion, South Carolina; two sister-in-laws Ethel W Conner of Marion, South Carolina and Gloria W Brayboy of Atlanta, Georgia; Godchildren Leah C. Ivory of Augusta, Georgia, Timothy S. Godbee of Arizona, Gina P. Porter of Mableton, Georgia, Orin W Price of Atlanta, Georgia and Robert A. Wilson of Augusta, Georgia; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, extended family and friends.

We little knew that morning That God wasgoing to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you, you did notgo alone,
for part of us went with you the day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories, your love is still ourguide:
and though we cannot see you, you are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same; but as God calls us one by one,
the chain will link again.

V------.

Grieve for me, for I would grieve for you,
Then brush away the sorrow and the tears,
Life is not over, but begins anew. With courage you mustgreet the coming years.
To live forever in the past is wrong, Can only cause you misery and pain,
Dwell not on memories overlong, With others you must share and care again.
Reach out and comfort those who comfort you,
Recall the years but only for a while, Nurse not your loneliness but live again,
Forget not - remember with a smile.

thanks
