Mrs. Maude S. Chiles, was born on February 15, 1923, in Augusta, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late Maude D. Parks and Otha C. Smith, Sr.
Maude was a native ofAugusta, Georgia. She attended Haines Institute, completing her high school education at Paine High School. She furthered her education at Paine College where she was elected "Miss Paine College", and graduated in 1944. Maude earned her Masters Degree in Library Science at Atlanta University.
On June 2, 1946, she was united in marriage to Willie Chiles. To this union, a son was born, William David Chiles.
Her lifelong career as a librarian began at Alabama State Teachers College in Montgomery, Alabama. Following her tenure at Alabama State Teachers College, Maude was the assistant librarian at Paine College for approximately four years. She transitioned to the Augusta Public School system, serving as a librarian at A. R. Johnson Jr. High School. With the opening ofT.W. Josey High School, Maude was appointed head librarian. She served in this capacity until retirement. After a year of retirement, Maude returned to Josey as a part time librarian for a number ofyears.
Her professional and civic organization memberships included: The Augusta Womens Civic Club, Paine College Alumni Association, Haines Institute Alumni Association, Georgia Teachers Association, Richmond County Teachers Association, Neighbors United, the DYWYK and the Leisurettes Bridge Clubs.
Maude was a dedicated and committed member of Bethel A.M.E. Church. She was active in The Choraliers as well as the annual summer daily vacation bible school where she served as treasurer. She lent her support to the development of the Bethel A.M.E. Church Library.
Her cherished memory will forever linger in the hearts and minds of her survivors: a devoted husband, Willie Chiles; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Sonya Chiles; two grandchildren, Billy and Nancy Chiles; sister and brotherin-law, Lillian and Jim Dumas; sisters-in-law, Samuella W. Chiles, Effie C. Sneed, and Evelyn C. Smith; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James and Sara Chiles; three nephews, Samuel W. Chiles, Otha C. Smith, Jr. and Kevin Smith; nieces, Francene C. Mangham, AletheaJ. Wyatt, Nicquel Mitchell; and a host ofrelatives and dear friends.
