'Rose Levonia Nelson Chenault was born on
December 9, 1924 in Asheville, North Carodna. J-fer parents were Dedrick DeWitt Nelson and Rosa Marie Nelson. She attendedAllen Nigh School for Cjirls in Asheville and Cater attended college briefly.
'Rose married Claude Allen Grant in 1943 and they lived briefly in Connecticut and later in New \Jork City. She worked at numerous jobs and subsequently spent more than 20 years with the United States PostalService from which she retired
in 1988. She moved t o 'Washington, D.C. in 1966 with
her then husband, Sylvester Chenault, and remained there u n til returning to New \Jork in 1991
to assist with the care and nurturance of hei grandchildren, Damian andTahra. A v e r y independent woman who enjoyed travel^ and gambling, 'Rosejoin ed the senior citizens exercise program at the 'Theodore young Community Center where she developed numerous friendships. She contracted what was later to be diagnosed as Amyotrophic LateralSclerosis (ALS) in 2000 and became increasingly disabledfrom this horribly debilitating disease. On July 18 she went to live at St. Cabrtni Nursing Nome in Dobbs ferry. Within 13 days of her admission, Rose expiredpeacefully
on July 30. 'Rose was a loving mother, grandmother and
friend. She is survived by her son, Claude DeWitt Grant, her stepmother, Lois Nelson, her daughterin-law, Ginger Waters Grant, her granddaughter, Tahra Lore Grant and a host offam ily, friends and acquaintances. A l l remember Rose as a gregarious, caring person who had a wonderful sense of hum 01 up to the very end of her life. She w ill be missed.
