Obituary
James Edward Carter, Jr. was born at 103110th Street, Augusta, Georgia on July 1, 1906. He was the son of Dr. and Mrs. James Edward Carter, Sr. and was educated at Haines Institute of this city He enrolled at Howard University where he did his undergraduate training and graduated from the Howard University School of Dentistry in 1930.
He entered the practice of dentistry in Augusta in July of 1930 and retired in 1981 after 51 years of service. He was a charter member of the Georgia Dental Society organized in 1937 and served as its President. He also served as President of the Stoney Medical, Dental, and Pharmaceutical Society and the National Dental Association. He was the first black in the state of Georgia to earn fellowship in the American College of Dentists, Academy of General Dentistry, the Academy of Dentists International, Federation Dentaire Internationale, Pierre Fauchard Academy, and Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Fraternity.
He was a charter member of the Ambassadors Bridge Club, Frontiers International, The Evening "Optimist Club, and Alpha Mu Boule of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
He was an active member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity for 68 years and served as Basileus of Psi Omega Chapter in Augusta and treasurer of the 7th District for 31 years. He has received numerous awards and honors and the most recent being a plaque placed in his honor at the site of his dental practice. He is listed in more than 12 national biographical publications.
He was a lifelong member of the Thankful Baptist Church and served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for 37 years and the Deacon Board for 32 years.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marjorie B. Carter; one son, James E. Carter, III; daughter-in-law, Judy L. Carter; two grandsons, James E. Carter, IV, and Mason Johnson, III; granddaughter-in-law, Connie E. Carter; great-grandson, Ryan Addison Carter, all of Augusta, Georgia; one sister-in-law, Edith C. Butler, Washington, DC; one niece, Patricia R. Holloway, Vacaville, California; and several cousins and many devoted friends.
