Robert Lee Buttry, Jr. (R.L.) was the fourth child and only son bom to Robert Lee Buttry, Sf. and Ethel Lanier Buttry on October 7,1947 in Savannah, Georgia.
R. L. received his early spiritual guidance at the United House of Prayer, where as a young man he was a member of the church band. He spent his childhood years on New Castle Street among many cousins and adult relatives. There he gained a strong sense of family and self.
He was educated in the public schools of Savannah. During his high school years,
he participated in the school marching band. Upon completing his secondary
education at Tompkins High School in Savannah, he joined the United States
Marine Corps on October 5, 1966. While serving his country he earned the
following medals and commendations: Silver Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal,
Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct .Medal, National Defense Service Medal,
Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal, and M-14 Rifle Marksman.
He returned to the United States after being wounded while in combat in Vietnam.
He was honorably discharged on May 9, 1969; as a disabled veteran.,

In December of 1967, be met and fell in love with the lovely Elteaser (Tina) Johnson. They were married in HolyMatrimony. on August 31,1968 in Savannah, Georgia. To this union two beautiful children were bom, Kenera and Robert III.
In an effort to continue his dream, R. L. and his wife moved to Los Angeles,
California in the summer of 1970. There he enrolled in college and majored iri
Computer Science. Upon graduation he began work in his chosen field of study
and watched his dream materialize. He worked as a computer programmer for the
past 22 years with various companies, the last being MCA Universal (Universal
Studios).

After living in Los Angeles for four y6ars, R. L. moved his family to their first home in
the San Fernando Valley (Lake View Terrace). There he became active with the
youth in the community. He worked hard at instilling values in these young men.
He often went to city schools and talked with young people about his career,
encouraging them to follow their dreams.

Being the fun loving person that he was, R. L. continued to participate -in recreational sports. He was a weekend athlete, playing volleyball every Friday night and being,the "big kid" on the basketball court. Racquetball was another game he enjoyed with his co-workers. R. L. remained active until the onset ofjiis illness in November, 1991.
R. L. leaves to cherish his memories and his smile, his beloved wife: Elteaser (Tina);
one daughter Kenera T. Buttry; one son: Robert L. Buttry; parents: Robert and
Ethel Buttry; four sisters: Dorothy Hill, of Fort Pierce, Florida, Dolores Grisby of
Sicklerville, New Jersey, Sunomia Haines and Barbara Jean Rouse, both of
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; a mother-in-law: Lula Nelson of Savannah; two sisters-
in-law: Janet Harris and Regina Rene, both of Savannah; four brothers-in-law:
William Grisby and James Haines of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Earl Johnson and
Edward Johnson of Savannah, a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, relatives,
extended family and friends.
