** CELEBRATION OF A LIFE **
George Thomas Bryant, Sr., son of the late Dea. David and Mrs. Pearl Bryant, was born January 12,1911 in Augusta, Georgia. He departed this life on Saturday, December 31, 1988.
In 1924, he was converted, baptized, and fellowshipped into the Thankful Baptist Church. He served Thankful through the years as Assistant Sunday School Superintendent, Church Clerk for 37 years, Trustee, Deacon, President of the Loyal Workers Club, initiator of the Improvement Fund, and in whatever capacity service was needed. After his retirement, he served as the first Administrative Director of the Thankful Day Care Center.
He attended the public schools of Richmond County and graduated from Paine College with a B.A. Degree in 1933. At Paine, he was captain of the football team and served as president of his senior class.
His professional involvement included teaching in Tate, Georgia, Hartwell, Georgia, and at A. R. Johnson High School, where he served as Assistant Prinicipal and Coach. He was a mail carrier for thirty-one years with the U.S. Postal Service. He retired from the postal service in 1972.
Mr. Bryant was dedicated to the Augusta community and did everything that he could to enhance its growth and development. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity having served as Basileus and Keeper of Finance. He was also the first president of the John M. Tutt Quarterback Club.
In 1981, he was inducted into the Paine College Hall of Fame. He received many awards and honors from his church and other organizations for his outstanding service to God and his fellowman.
Cherishing fond memories are: a loving wife, Mrs. Edwina Stewart Bryant; three devoted children, Mrs. Gwendolyn Bryant Peters of Chicago, 111., Mr. George T. Bryant, Jr. of Detroit, Midi., and Ms. Trena L. Bryant of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. Mattie B. Williams of Bronx, New York and Mrs. Katherine B. Knight of Richmond, Virginia; two brothers, Mr. Alfred E. Bryant and Mr. William B. Bryant both of Augusta, Ga.; three grandchildren, Frank E. Peters, Jinah Bryant, and Jerron Bryant; one son-in-law, Mr. Effy Peters of Chicago, 111.; in-laws, Mr. Albert Williams, Mr. Sidney Knight, Mrs. Betty Bryant, Ms. Jennie Mears, Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Smith, and Mr. and Mrs. Francis Stewart; nieces, nephews, cousins; two health-care companions, Mrs. Ruby Frank and Ms. Janice Henderson; and many, many friends.
